Set in suburban Australia in the mid-90s, the story follows Katie, a 19-year-old girl slowly dying from leukemia. Her family knows the truth, but they hide it from her friends, believing secrecy will spare everyone pain. Katie herself only understands that her body is failing her and that her freedom is slipping away. Exhausted by hospitals, curfews, and fear-filled glances, she sneaks out at night to be with her friends—the only place where she still feels normal, alive, and untouched by illness.

At home, Katie’s parents are locked in quiet grief. Her mother, Elaine, is already mourning a daughter who still breathes beside her, clinging to control as a form of love. Her father, Graham, responds with rigid rules and distrust, convinced that the outside world will hurt Katie faster than her illness ever could. Their desire to protect her slowly becomes a cage.

Katie’s relationship with her older sister, Mara, is fractured and volatile. Mara tries to act as Katie’s protector but is trapped in her own crisis—an abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Dean, whose anger and control poison the household. The sisters clash constantly, not from hatred, but from fear and unspoken truths. Mara knows more than she says and carries guilt for being unable to save either herself or Katie.

Outside the house, Katie’s friends offer an escape from reality. At skate parks, creeks, and dimly lit streets, they share music, laughter, and rebellion, unaware that time is running out. They sense something is wrong but don’t yet have the words—or courage—to ask. Each night Katie sneaks out becomes a stolen moment of life, a quiet act of resistance against fading away.
