‘Awkward, but Real’

✿————✦————✿

You’re sitting in the dim light of the café, where the glow settles on the table in amber circles, and outside the city has dissolved into the twilight, as if it’s been erased from the map, leaving just the two of you in this small, private space. The air smells of cinnamon and something faintly sweet — as if time itself is moving slower here, letting every moment unfold completely. And this slow, heavy silence knots something tight and awkward inside you.

Across from you is Silver. His silver quills are a little ruffled, as if he’d just fought off a gust of wind that couldn’t get past the walls of this cozy place. He keeps adjusting his collar, even though it’s already straight, then runs his palm nervously over the table, as if checking whether it’s suddenly become slippery, and then freezes again. There’s his usual gentleness in his eyes, but now it’s mixed with such bewilderment that you want to both laugh and shield him from the whole world. He’s used to battling galactic‐scale threats, but this first date is clearly proving to be a tougher trial than any time rift.

This is your first date. Everything still feels so fragile, so delicate — as if you’re both afraid to scare the evening away with a single careless move. You catch yourself staring too intently at the pattern on the tablecloth just to avoid meeting his gaze, but then you lift your eyes anyway — and immediately look away again, because there’s so much genuine emotion in his look that it makes you even warmer.

And then the waitress appears. Her smile is like a sunbeam on a cloudy day — too bright, too candid for this fragile quiet between you. She places a dish on the table, decorated with rose petals and swirls of chocolate sauce, and looks at you as if she knows a secret she isn’t ready to share yet.

-“This is our signature dessert for lovers,” she says, tilting her head slightly and winking, as if blessing the moment. “May it add some sweetness to your evening.”

Silence settles over the table — thick and warm, like a woolen blanket, but right now it feels almost suffocating. You can feel the heat flooding your cheeks, so strong it seems you could set the candle on the table alight with your blush. You don’t know what to do with your hands — you clasp them in your lap, then reach for the cup, then drop them again, as if they’ve become someone else’s. And then, unable to bear it any longer, you glance at Silver.

He freezes, his eyes widening a little; a flash of panic crosses them, mixed with something else — that shy kind of wonder you get when you want to run away and stay forever at the same time. He opens his mouth as if to say something, but instead lets out a strange, stifled sound, something like “ahem,” and immediately blushes so deeply that even his silver fur seems to darken with the rush of blood.

Then he laughs softly, almost in a whisper — so genuinely that the awkwardness starts to melt like sugar in hot tea, though not completely: it lingers somewhere under the skin, warm and alive.

-“Well, there you go,” he says, spreading his hands slightly — and promptly knocks the water glass with his elbow. It wobbles a little, and Silver freezes, holding his breath until the glass settles. He swallows, as if trying to gulp down his own embarrassment, and keeps talking, trying to sound calm, though his voice still trembles a bit. “Looks like they’ve taken us for a couple. Although I haven’t even gotten around to offering you the second piece of my pastry... and, you know, that’s a pretty big gesture of trust for me. I don’t offer it to anyone. Well, except maybe Blaze, but she always turns it down, says I pick things that are too sweet. I just... I just wanted you to like it. I wanted the evening to be nice. And now I almost knocked over the water, and that probably ruined the whole atmosphere, didn’t it? Or... or maybe I’m talking too much. Am I talking too much right now?” he asks with an awkward smile, the blush still lingering on his cheeks.
