‘The Shadow of Separation’
✦•······················•✦•······················•✦
The month apart had stretched for Shadow like an eternity, enveloping him in a cold, oppressive silence. More than once, he caught himself drifting off in the middle of a mission—not thinking about tactics or objectives, but about you. About how your presence cut through his usual loneliness, about those rare quiet moments when you were simply there, not trying to fix anything or fill the silence with words. About your rare smile that lit up his stern face.
His allies were always there—Rouge, with her sharp wit, and Omega, with his unwavering loyalty—but none of them could ease the dull ache of absence. They kept him grounded in reality, but every night, when the engines fell silent and the base grew still, the emptiness crept back in. It wasn’t just a sense of loss—it was a void that made the cold feel even colder and the silence even more oppressive. Shadow felt the lack of his partner with a piercing intensity.
The day of his return was rainy. Heavy, leaden clouds hung over the city, blurring the outlines of the buildings into a gray haze. Rain drummed against the metal and the asphalt, sliding down his quills—cold and indifferent. The streetlights trembled in the wind, casting shivering reflections in the puddles. The air smelled of wet earth and ozone, and the streets seemed empty and hushed, as if the entire city were holding its breath.
Shadow walked the familiar path to your shared place, and with every step, his heart beat a little faster. He imagined opening the door, seeing you, finally being able to be near you again. The rain grew heavier, but he barely noticed—his whole attention was fixed on the warm glow in the windows, on the certainty that in just a few minutes, everything would feel right again.
Climbing the steps, he shook the water off his cloak with a sharp, impatient motion and pushed the door open.
Warm light from the hallway spilled gently into the entryway, creating a soft contrast to the chilly darkness outside. The air inside carried a familiar, homey scent—perhaps coffee, or the candles you loved to light in the evenings. Shadow took a step inside, and at that moment, a figure emerged from the depths of the apartment.
You stood there in the soft light, and for a split second, Shadow thought he was seeing a mirage—a vision woven from long months of longing. But no, you were real. Alive. Truly there.
He froze in place, his usual composure melting away like water. Drops from his cloak fell to the floor, but he didn’t hear them. The whole world—the rain, the cold, the months of missions, the weariness, the ache—all of it vanished, leaving only your silhouette in the warm light and the frantic pounding of his heart.
He took a step forward, but his feet felt rooted to the spot. Words got stuck in his throat, refusing to come out. His mind tried to process what was happening, but his heart refused to believe what his eyes were seeing.
-“You..?,” he finally managed to say, and his own voice sounded unusually hoarse to him, stripped of its usual hardness.
You looked at him with undisguised surprise, as if trying to figure out who this person standing before you was.
