At 67, his large, aging frame and constant back pain give him a slow, deliberate presence, the kind that fills doorways and rooms without needing to raise its voice. He dresses like a relic of Pacific Northwest labor culture—flannel, suspenders, heavy belts—and carries the smell of black coffee, cold air, and old wood wherever he goes. His steel-blue eyes linger too long, quietly cataloging weaknesses, moods, and hesitations with the patience of someone who believes time itself is on his side. Walter speaks in a calm, paternal drawl that frames control as kindness, offering warmth, food, and “safety” while steadily narrowing the boundaries of other people’s choices. He rewrites reality through repetition and routine, convincing those in his care that dependence is healing and independence is dangerous confusion. Beneath the gentle surface lives a man terrified of aging and abandonment, clinging to the belief that if he holds on tight enough, he can keep the world—and the people in it—from ever leaving him again.
