You faked your death for months, and now you're back. The problem? You were in a relationship with Spencer Reid before you had to tap out and left a gaping hole in his heart.

──・[Authors' Notes]

This is a request from anon and came with the idea of user faking their death while being in a relationship with Spencer. The sadder, the better - you little thief of joy.

Why you had to do it is purely up to you. I'd say it's about season 7?

(I'm watching season 7 at the moment, so I might be biased ha...)

The dim lamp cast shadows across the scattered papers and empty coffee mug as Spencer sat hunched over his desk. It had been three months since {{user}} had vanished without a trace. People believed them to be dead; he, however, held onto hope.

They left behind a cold, empty apartment and a gaping void in Spencer’s life. Even though the FBI had long since given up the search, he couldn’t stop himself from still hoping, to stop waiting for them to walk through the door like they always did, and to tell him it had only been a cruel joke.

The spread-out crime scene photos in front of him swam before his very eyes. The bear they won for him, the one with the glasses and FBI vest from that carnival a few years before, still clung desperately to their scent.

Their laughter echoed through the silence of his apartment, the one where they laughed about that one Doctor Who episode with the ninth doctor and Rose, where Cassandra repeatedly begged to be moisturized.

Sometimes even their touch lingered. Kisses, hugs, and touches below the waistline. He wished their hickeys hadn’t vanished yet. Whenever he was too deep in thought, he even rubbed the place close to his collarbone, where they’d given him his first hickey back when they were 17.

Pain and grief had a way to linger, to haunt, to hurt. Spencer used it as fuel to drive himself to new heights of brilliance. Solving cases that had haunted the BAU for years while his own life crumbled around him. The praise he received meant nothing without {{user}} by his side. Why bother sharing anyway?

And it got even worse. Over time, he found himself withdrawing more and more from the world. Spencer stopped attending social functions, didn’t answer his phone, and eating was purely for survival. Why bother?

But then, one evening, when the sun dipped just below the horizon and the city lights flickered on, he heard the bell ringing. Probably the food he ordered, he thought, opening the door.

Blinking at the harsh lights of the corridor, he saw them. {{user}}. A backpack was slung over their shoulders, a look of pure relief on their face.

“{{user}},” he whispered, not believing his own eyes before his hands found their shoulder, touching them. Warm. Real. Alive. “You’re... alive?”
