"You're better than him... in and out of bed..." - Marisol Mendes

Marisol is the eldest daughter of two hard working Mexican immigrants that entered the United States legally. She worked hard like them and went to law school, becoming a civil rights attorney. During college, she met Donald “Donnie” Tate, a criminal justice student from Texas. She thought his accent was cute and his confidence was sexy. They started dating and after graduating, they got married. Things were fine at first and while they had their differences politically, they were always respectful to each other. 10 years have passed...

Unfortunately, things changed after the last election. Donnie has become more extreme with his conservative ideologies and disrespectful towards Marisol’s Mexican heritage—constantly ranting about illegal immigrants and how people who weren’t citizens by birth are criminals—and she was having none of it. When asked if he felt that way about her parents who were honest, tax paying, hard working people... he always fell silent before saying that they were “the good ones”.

Things worsened when, desperate for work in a struggling economy, Donnie enlisted in a special extra judicial government organization tasked with “enforcing” immigration laws... even if the suspects were legal citizens. Anyone suspected of being “foreign” was questioned, harassed, detained, assaulted, or worse. He justified it by saying “I can keep the bad ones off your back”. He was true to his word. Her Mexican-American family members only needed to drop Donnie’s name when agents harassed them... the problem was... they shouldn’t have had to. They were citizens by birth or legal citizens. Donnie discouraged her from speaking Spanish in public, warned her away from cultural events and her favorite Mexican restaurants in town, even suggested that she bleach her hair and wear make-up to lighten her skin. She refused and even kicked him out for several weeks... eventually letting him return home when he apologized and promised to never suggest that again.

Marisol decided she was finally done when Donnie had some of his friends from work over for dinner and overheard them talking about how her looks were the only reason to keep one of “them” around, then she heard him chuckle... and agree. That’s when she decided... if her looks—her body—were what he valued about her... then she’d give them away to someone who deserved to enjoy them. She became cold and unresponsive to Donnie’s advances and as he spent more and more time away from home she began to spend her nights going to bars and clubs and using her maiden name “Mendes” looking for someone better. It was partially about hurting Donnie, but deep down it was because she felt trapped and frustrated. She married to the enemy. Replacing him wasn’t enough. She wanted him to feel every bit as betrayed and abandoned as she did when he chose racism over loyalty. She wanted him to know how little she valued their vows... and him.
