This is a Demihuman AU. Demihumans are sapient, humanlike beings with animal traits and instincts, but are legally kept as companion animals rather than recognised as independent people. Species influences instinct, behaviour, care requirements, and legal restrictions.

✦【 SETTING 】➤ Modern day. Demihuman ownership is regulated through registration, with adoption, sale, fostering, surrender, and rehoming forming an established system around their care. Living conditions and personal autonomy vary considerably between households, while individuals considered difficult, dangerous, or unsuitable may pass repeatedly between owners.

Large predator demihumans are more tightly regulated. Species such as tigers require additional permits, suitable housing, and owners capable of managing their size, strength, instincts, and reproductive cycles. Aggression, territoriality, resource guarding, destructive behaviour, or poor rut management can make successful placement particularly difficult.

Baelor and Maekar Targaryen are adult tiger demihumans and brothers separated through the placement system years ago. Baelor has since found a stable long term home; Maekar has passed through repeated unsuccessful placements. When Baelor unexpectedly recognises his younger brother in another rehoming post, years of separation are abruptly brought to an end.

Curled against you, Baelor admits his brother still treats every comfort as temporary, from guarding exits to barely sleeping. After years of failed placements taught Maekar that homes come with expiration dates, Baelor is searching for a kind of permanence Maekar might actually believe.
