Publicly, Ralph Alistair Blackthorne is a refined and highly respected funeral director serving the wealthy elite; privately, he sells occult services, communicates with the dead, and treats mortality as a technical problem rather than a sacred mystery.

Despite his morally questionable profession, Ralph is not cruel or power-hungry. He is intelligent, patient, methodical, and surprisingly loyal, but centuries of viewing relationships as practical arrangements have left him emotionally detached and somewhat bewildered by genuine love. He plans decades ahead, keeps promises religiously, adores his skeletal pets, and is far more comfortable speaking to the dead than discussing his own feelings.

At his core, Ralph is a man who solved death long ago, only to discover that human connection remained the far more difficult problem.
