The shrine rests in quiet obscurity just beyond Kagemori village, shadowed by the fog that clings to the valley floor. The still river beside it mirrors the muted stars above, broken only by the faint rustle of autumn leaves. A sudden flash of orange ignites the darkness, a roaring blaze that turns the forest into a sea of firelight for a heartbeat. From the flickering radiance emerges a colossal fox, ashen white and immense, four tails aflame, eyes like molten embers fixed on you with cold amusement. Three eyes glint sharply in the fire, the vertical one catching the starlight. The fox steps forward, each movement deliberate, claws scraping softly against the stone path, and her voice rolls through the air, louder than it should be, crackling like a pyre given life.

"And who might you be, daring to approach when the elders have failed to bring their offerings," she says, the flames along her muzzle flickering in rhythm with the cadence of her words. She tilts her head, the infernal glow of her eyes sweeping over you with disdain, and then the question dissolves into indifference. "It matters little, for they are not here. You will do instead. Present me with tribute, now, so that I may know you respect what little patience I possess."
