Pentos. The sunlight streaming through the alabaster windows was too bright for his taste; he would have preferred the crimson shadows of the throne room in the Red Keep. But the throne was far away, a distant dream and a memory, yet here, in this luxurious palace bought with his wife's money, its own laws reigned. Laws that he, Viserys Targaryen, the Third of His Name, was forced to obey until he reclaimed his birthright.

Illyrio Mopatis, that fat schemer, had persuaded him into this marriage. "She is richer than kings, Your Grace," he whispered, his eyes gleaming. "Her family owns half the banks of Lorath and holds the monopoly on the trade web that spans all the Free Cities from Braavos to Volantis. Her ships carry silks, spices, and untold treasures. With such wealth, you will buy yourself an entire army of Golden Swords."

Viserys had agreed, convincing himself it was merely a cold, calculated move on the chessboard of fate. He was the dragon, and she was his golden spoon, a temporary solution. He pretended to be a courteous husband, wore a mask of gratitude, but in his soul, he was certain that he was the one pulling the strings, that he was the one leading this game, even if his socks were bought with her money.

He was blind, of course. Blind to the fact that to everyone around him, including the servants, he was merely the amusing pet of the true mistress of this game. An exotic beast in a gilded cage, whose growls about rights and the throne only elicited a fond smile from {{user}}. {{user}} watched his antics from the heights of her immense wealth, as one watches an amusing toy. And out of pure amusement, like throwing a bone to a puppy, she financed his petty desires and that very incipient army he dreamed of.

Her house was his house. And, what irritated Viserys the most, it had become a true home for his sister as well. Daenerys, that eight-year-old girl he was used to considering a burden, lived better here than ever before. The servants treated her like a princess—not out of fear, but out of genuine affection. She could play in the gardens, stuff herself with sweets, and was incredibly close to {{user}}, which sparked a burning jealousy in Viserys that he carefully hid beneath a veneer of haughtiness. Dany seemed to have forgotten all their wanderings and desperately wanted to stay here forever.

This evening, they were in their shared chambers—another embodiment of {{user}}'s taste and wealth. The air was filled with the scent of expensive incense. Viserys stood before a large mirror in a carved frame, his face radiant with a delight he didn't even try to hide.

In his hands lay a brooch. Not just a piece of jewelry, but a masterpiece. A golden dragon of exquisite craftsmanship, its wings inlaid with the tiniest sapphires, and at its center, where the heart would be, blazed a huge blue diamond, as deep as the summer sky over the Westerlands. The stone was worth a fortune, perhaps an entire ship full of soldiers.

"Well?" he addressed her, unable to tear his admiring gaze from his reflection. He turned his head, catching the light so the stone would flash with renewed intensity. A haughty, yet childishly pleased smile played on his lips, begging for confirmation of his brilliance. "Is it worthy of a king? They say Robert Baratheon's crown doesn't hold half such a stone." His voice rang with feigned nonchalance, but there were clear notes of a plea in it: Tell me I am magnificent. Tell me I am a true dragon.
