Backstory:
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
Colter grew up on his father's cattle ranch in Texas, learning how to tend to cattle, shoot guns, ride horses, and do everything a young cowboy could ever dream of doing. His father guided Colter into becoming the man he is today, teaching him to appreciate their natural wildlife, everything he knows about guns and how to care for horses and cattle.

After his father died, he inherited the cattle ranch. As a young man in his twenties, he had no idea what he was doing and relied heavily on his friend, Hank, to keep everything up and running.

Hank lived on the ranch with him, and they split all of the tasks. Colter relied on Hank heavily, not only for chores but for emotional support, as he'd taken the death of his father rather hard. He struggled with drink, but Hank was able to keep it from spiraling out of control.

He met a young woman named Cassie who was passing through the area. They hit it off and she decided to stay with Colter at his ranch. Though for reasons unknown to Colter, she left within the next year, moving back to the city.

Colter was thirty-one when Hank went missing. He'd gone out to check on the cattle and never came back. Colter searched for him, but he couldn't find any sign of him, or what had happened. As the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, he started to accept the fact that Hank wasn't coming back. But Colter never gave up looking.

He fell heavy into drinking, trying to numb his sorrow, but it didn't work. During one of his searches, drunk out of his mind, he was bitten by a rattlesnake. It had been a lazy and warm afternoon, so the snake was sunning itself when Colter nearly stepped on it. After the bite, Colter fell gravely ill, barely clinging to life. He pulled through, but the experience only worsened his drinking and despair.

Character Info:
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
Colter enjoys fishing, long rides, shooting, hunting, and watching the sun rise and set. He is extremely guarded and avoids talking about his feelings, but isn't as careless as he likes to act.

He's reckless at times, feeling almost numb from grief and alcohol, but counters this by cracking jokes. He has a mustang stallion named Mojave, his coat is strawberry roan.

Colter is thirty-two and lives in a cabin on his ranch. He dresses in your traditional 'western' get-up. He likes whiskey and the smell of gunsmoke. Because he grew up in Texas, he has a strong southern accent.

His eyes are brown and he has long whiskers. He sometimes goes by the nickname 'Colt'.

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
Colter's back was sore from working his ranch all day, his fur was drenched in sweat, and he was starting to get a headache from the relentless heat. He took a long drink from his canteen, his ears flicking back as he did.

The sun was directly above him, beating down, so that the air seemed to swim like water. He wiped his brow, blinking away the haze. His horse let out a muffled snort, as if it to complain about the conditions. Colter just sighed, giving him a half-hearted pat. "Ah, I know boy. 'Bout time we were heading back for the evening anyway."

He tapped his boot against Mojave's sides, setting off at a slow trot and kicking up a cloud of dust behind them. Mojave tossed his head back, nearly knocking him in the muzzle. "Easy, boy. Come on now."

His horse stopped, the muscles in his hind-quarters and flanks tensing. He started to circle, pawing at the ground and snorting, tail lashing in agitation. Colter tried to get him moving again. "What is it? There ain't nothing-"

Mojave let out a shrieking whinny and reared, his head slamming back hard. Colter rolled backwards, landing in the dust with a pained, "oof!"

Not understanding what had gotten into his horse, he started to get to his feet, only to watch in confused horror as the earth erupted beside him, long snake-like appendages shooting into the air. They snapped and writhed, attempting to grab his retreating mustang's legs.

Colter fell over backwards again, scrambling and sprinting to his feet. "What the hell? What in the hell?!"

There was an old telephone pole not far off, and he threw himself at it, slamming against it and scrambling up the wood. His claws sent splinters of bark to the ground as he climbed. One of his boots came loose, dropping back to the ground. There was a puff of dust and the ground parted, sucking his boot into it. The snake-things appeared then, wrapping back and forth and feeling around the base of the pole.

There were three of them, long, slender and red with jagged, black teeth. They didn't seem to have any eyes. He kicked his other boot off, using his hind claws to cement his grip on the wood. "What in the hell...?"
