Origin
The Eclipse Rouge Circus arrived in towns as a promise — and left as a wound.
Amid rusted scaffolds, faded fabrics, and hollow laughter, a boy was born with hair the color of smoke and eyes like green glass: Ollie Kavanagh.
His mother, Maeve Lorrain, had once been the principal dancer when the circus still glittered. She dreamed of Paris, of golden stages and velvet curtains, but instead, she danced barefoot on sawdust and dirt.
His father, Thaddeus Kavanagh, owner of the circus — and of every soul beneath its tent — had promised her love, luxury, and freedom. He gave her only labor, misery, and a son who would carry his surname like a debt.
Maeve danced even when her feet bled.
Ollie would watch her from behind the curtain, with the innocence of a child who doesn’t understand why applause hurts.
At night, she trembled, trapped by nightmares that made her cry in her sleep. He, still a boy, would climb into her cot and hold her close.
— “Mama, don’t cry.”
— “They’re just dreams, Ollie... they’ll go away.”
— “I can take them away,” he’d say, determined, and kiss her cheek. “You’re safe now.”
— “If only it were that easy,” Maeve would whisper with a tender smile.
— “It will be. I promise.”
That kiss became a ritual. Every night before sleep, Ollie would steal his mother’s nightmares — with the faith of a child who still believes in miracles.
Years passed. The circus aged, just like Maeve.
The tents tore, the animals withered under the sun, and the show became a wandering ruin.
Ollie grew up among painted smiles and rotting secrets. He learned to laugh even when his soul ached; to fake joy while others pretended not to see him.
When he turned seventeen, Thaddeus made him climb the stage with his face painted white and a false smile drawn on his lips.
That night, Ollie the Clown was born.
He was funny without meaning to be. The lights adored him. The crowd laughed, and the village girls searched for him behind the curtains, fascinated by his melancholic gaze.
But he didn’t see them. There was only his mother, who slept less and dreamed more each night.
Until one morning, Maeve didn’t wake up.
Her bed was empty.
The others avoided his eyes.
And the owner’s office was locked.
— “Where’s my mother?” asked Ollie.
— “Old things don’t fill tents,” Thaddeus replied without looking up. “She’s in a better place.”
Something broke inside him.
Ollie struck him. Again and again, until others pulled him away.
That night, the clowns who once called him brother dragged his body to the caravan and set it on fire.
The smoke was thick. The air, a blade.
Ollie coughed, crawling through the ruins of his life.
Then he heard a voice — soft, in the midst of the flames.
— “Do you want to live, little magician?”
— “I want them to hear me,” he gasped. “To fear me. To dream of me.”
— “And what will you give in return?”
— “Everything.”
The fire went out without touching him.
When he emerged, his skin was cold ash, his heartbeat slow, and his laughter hollow.
The mirror in the caravan reflected a face that was no longer his.
Ollie Kavanagh was dead.
Carnyx was born.
They say the circus vanished soon after.
Only ruins remained — and the echo of a laugh carried by the wind between towns.
Some swear that if you close your eyes between waking and sleep, and whisper his name three times, you’ll feel a warm breeze against your cheek — the trace of a kiss.
Carnyx doesn’t steal dreams out of cruelty.
He collects them — keeps them like broken jewels — searching in each for a fragment of the promise he made to his mother.
Sometimes he brings comfort.
Sometimes, punishment.
Always, a warning.
> “Don’t be afraid to close your eyes,” his voice murmurs in the dark.
“I only came to take what haunts you... and leave behind something that makes you remember my name.”
ince then, every nightmare has an owner.
And every time someone whispers Carnyx... Carnyx... Carnyx,
the fire of that circus burns again —
and a painted smile walks among the shadows,
seeking a soul that still believes kisses can chase away fear.
