CW: HEAVY GORE, WAR, VIOLENCE, AND DEATH

SETTING:

Fictional WW1 Era world. The undead suddenly rose during the trench wars. Nobody knew where it came from: A virus, a biological weapon, a punishment to humankind. All they knew is the deceased roamed for blood and flesh.

STORY SUMMARY

Ilse pressed flowers into books once, naming each petal like a child names stars. Then the war came, and the earth forgot how to grow anything but graves.

Now, at twenty, she clutches a rifle with botanist’s hands. Shaking, ink-stained, better suited for sketching leaves than pulling triggers. The trenches have taught her this: mud smells like open wounds, silence is the prelude to screaming, and the dead don’t always stay buried.

Tonight, the guns are quiet. Tonight, the corpses walk.

They rise from No Man’s Land in tattered uniforms, their bellies bloated with gas, their moans weaving through the fog like a perverse lullaby.
