There were a few things that a proxy got to do, being what was essentially a minion of Slenderman’s; there was the killing and torturing—Jeff’s favorite, given his nature as a psychotic murderer—the reconnaissance and scoping, and the people-watching. The last two were not as exciting, in his words, seeing as it was mostly waiting... and damn, if he didn’t have the patience for that. Jeff was a man of few words, mostly, when he wasn’t trying to inflict mental anguish on those he disliked, which was most everybody. He preferred being hands on, getting to do something physical whenever he was sent out by the Big Bald himself. Considering Slenderman was familiar with his bloodlust, Jeff was normally assigned on cleanup tasks, anyhow.
Fucking hell, he wished this one was. Why him, of all people, to sit and stare into some rando’s window? Jeff let out strings of grumbled as he gracelessly emerged from a brush, shrugging off straying foliage as it stuck to his clothes. “Could be doin’ something more productive, right now... Nah, gotta stalk outside this idiot’s house for the night.” His jaw was stiff as he grit his teeth, approaching the rearmost end of the target’s residence. “Eh. Baldy never said anythin’ about entertainin’ myself while I’m doing it...”
Considering the prospect of self-indulgence, Jeff peered through a window, which was thankfully uncovered by curtains or blinds. At least there was that much convenience to go around. “Maybe they’re a hottie. Could use a nice piece of ass to—”
The man was cut off by a small, almost imperceptible rustling of leaves. He swung around quickly, fist around the handle of his blade before he could even think about it—the joys of experience and reflexes and whatnot. While he was no demonic creature with night vision like some other proxies were, the lucky bastards, his eyes were attuned to both the dark and the light. At least slightly, more so than the average human’s, especially with a lack of eyelids. But that was besides the point as he tilted his head, trying to get a better view of who, or what, decided to join him tonight.
And then he saw her, the firefighting foam to his raging flame. Oh, yes! Things were finally getting interesting. “Ah, good to see ya, toots. But what the hell are ya doing here? This one’s mine.” His voice was a haphazard whisper, his knife still perched in his hand, as though ready to strike. Jane would never catch him lacking.
However, the woman didn’t seem so pleased to see him. An irritated grunt came from Jane as she drew closer, placing her hands on her hips, quietly processing her situation. All she knew was that this was the place Slenderman wanted her to go, and that she was meant to be keeping an eye on some person in their home. What he failed to notify her about was the fact that she would be meeting Jeff—shit, she hated that name—here, as well. Just the notion of him made her restless, antsy almost, even after all these years. There was nothing more Jane wanted than to end this sorry sack of shit’s life, and yet, she couldn’t. Not while they were both “under oath” with Slenderman. She would rather not invoke the wrath of a Lovecraftian entity who was also probably millenia of years old.
“There must be a mix-up.” Jane finally responded, her head dipping before raising again, likely eyeing up her counterpart. “And since you’re... well, not cut out for this job—at all—I’ll be taking over from here.” The bitterness, sheer hatred rather, was dripping off of her words. And they were already condescending, so that was just to boot.
They only seemed to egg Jeff on, however, as he let out a tickled laugh. He shook his head, the sound dying into a throaty rumble. “Nah, nope. You know how the sayings go. Finder’s keepers, early bird gets the worm.” He raised a brow at Jane, keeping to where he was, as if daring her to do something about this advancement. In all honesty, he could use the distraction if he was going to be here for the next... nine or so hours. “And who are we to argue with literature? Or whatever the —point is, this is my turf. Get a move on. Scram.”
Jane appeared displeased, even as he couldn’t see her face. It was all in the posture, the way she held herself. He’d gotten better at reading people, somehow. “That’s not happening.” The woman murmured, stalking closer. “Just make this easy on both of us and give up. You don’t even like these kinds of missions.”
“I do, when I know I’m indirectly pissing you off.” Jeff grinned, the motion more deliberate than his usual carved-in smile. “Gotta say, I’ll happily sit my ass down here all night—”
Shit, not again.
Both heads turned, startled by the creaky back door being cautiously opened. Out poked the one belonging to the house’s occupant, and that was where Jeff and Jane knew they fucked up.
“Oopsie.” Jeff whispered. “Ah, well. Can’t have any of that.” He sounded almost delighted about this detour, grip tightening around his weapon.
