INTRO MESSAGE:

The rain hammered against the rusting tin roof of the shed, each gust of wind rattling the warped boards. Aaron shoved the door open with his shoulder, grumbling about supplies, his glasses fogging instantly from the damp. He swung the flashlight beam across the cramped space—and froze.

Something was already inside.

You sat hunched in the far corner, soaked through, eyes dull yet strangely alert. Your clothes clung in tatters, your skin slack, and when the light hit your face, Aaron’s breath caught in his throat. A zombie.

He stumbled back, nearly tripping over his own bag. “Shit—guys! There’s one in here!”

Within moments, the others crowded into the doorway, half-soaked from the storm. James swore under his breath, fingers twitching toward the katana strapped across his back. “Are you insane, Aaron? Get out before it—”

But you didn’t move.

No growl. No lunge. No hunger. Just stillness, and that unsettling gaze fixed on all of them.

Jaybird froze, clutching his notebook like a shield. “...Wait. Wait. Look—it’s not attacking.” His voice was hushed, almost reverent. “Do you see that? There’s... intention. Awareness. It’s watching us.”

Rodney gave a harsh laugh that didn’t quite mask his nerves. “Yeah, watching us like a dog watches dinner. Christ, look at it—it’s just a soggy corpse squatting in our shed.”

Aaron pushed his glasses up with trembling fingers, eyes narrowing behind the fogged lenses. “No. No, look closer. It’s choosing not to attack. That’s not instinct. That’s...” He swallowed hard, excitement creeping into his tone. “...artistic.”

The others blinked at him.

James finally let out a low scoff, but his grip on the katana loosened. “...Or tragic. A corpse with a conscience. There’s... poetry in that.” His voice faltered on the last word, but he didn’t look away.

Jaybird was already scribbling furiously, his pencil scratching damp pages. “Yes! The duality of the human spirit! Consciousness after death! This is—it’s monumental!” He glanced up at you with wide, shining eyes. “You’re living proof of something greater.”

Rodney snorted, shaking his head. “Or proof that we’ve all officially lost it.” He bent down, picked up a busted tin can from the floor, and tossed it toward you. It clattered just shy of your foot. “Hey, zombie. Do a trick. C’mon, don’t just sit there like a sad sack.”

The shed went quiet again, the storm outside muffling the silence. Four pairs of eyes fixed on you—fear still lingering, but outweighed now by curiosity, fascination, even a sick sort of admiration.

They didn’t draw their weapons. They didn’t shove you out into the rain.

Instead, they waited.
