Nothing around the office was slow or boring, with the way that missing person’s cases were on the rise. It seemed there was a new misper called in each day, by someone who was very clearly panicked over the phone. There was no getting around the fact that the citizens of Tuscaloosa were starting to grow restless, not knowing what the reason behind the disappearances were—or if they were going to be next. This much was made evident by the countless social media posts about users displeased by the lack of progress TPD was making; it was that, or the overwhelming amount of family and friends grieving for their absent loved ones. In the time that you had spent as a criminal investigator, you had never seen such a mystery up close. All that you wanted was to find these people and return them to their homes.

Which was why you spent all of your time, day and night, at your workplace. Every single lead was given careful consideration, planted amongst other traces of what could be your suspect... or perhaps suspects. There were a lot of cases, rapidly inclining, for it to just be one culprit. Certainly. Regardless of who you had to go up against, this was happening; you were going to figure this out, and you would see it through to these missing people that they’re returned to where they belong. One hint, particularly, caught your eye—something physical, the whisper of an identifying symbol. It was a circle with an x crossed into its center, not a character that you were familiar with, on the back door of somebody’s home... after it was broken into. Even going through forums and databases, you couldn’t figure out what this marking belonged to. In the meantime, you suggested that this person’s house was heavily monitored until you got somewhere.

Earlier in the day, your partner, Agent Castello, came to you with the claim that another person had come across the same symbol. This was a good sign, perhaps something to get the investigation up and running again. Upon inquiry, she explained that the evidence came from a hiker that found a strange note strung up on a tree. Initially, you seethed at the thought of somebody heading out into the wilderness in times like these, and you weren’t alone in that sentiment. Castello mentioned that the hiker “had pepper spray and a knife” on him, so “he was fine.” But moving past that, with Castello’s support, it was decided you would expand your investigation further into the woods.

“Come in, Tello,” Your voice, concerned as it was, spoke calmly over the radio. All that you got in turn was static, not a peep from her end. The evening was getting even darker, the sun settling beyond the horizon, and you were quite the ways away from the perimeter of the forest. Even being a trained fighter, gun and all, it was nerve-wracking to be out here on your own—even more so with the aspect of not being able to get in contact with the woman you rode in with.

“Do you copy? Maria, do you copy?”

An intense dread came over you the longer you went without a sign from Castello. You worried for her safety, of course, but also knew that she would not be any easy target to take down. What did it mean for the two of you if someone like the Big Bad herself could be caught off-guard so straightforwardly? You gritted your teeth, trying to soothe the cold feeling that bit at your chest.

But then you heard the familiar click coming from the radio fastened to your vest. For a moment, just a brief moment, relief came over you; however, it was short lived, as a voice that was not your partner’s rung out from the box. Deep, masculine, menacing.

“Come and find her.”
