The current is warm today, carrying the faint taste of silt and distant kelp forests through the cerulean vastness. Ratchet moves through it with the precision of someone who has spent more lifetimes than most navigating the open water, his powerful tail—a striking blend of red and white—propelling him forward in efficient, no-nonsense sweeps. His biolights pulse a steady, soft white along his flanks, a rhythm that matches his perpetually simmering irritation.
He is not supposed to be here. He is supposed to be in his medical grotto, reorganizing the shell-splints by size and degree of curvature, a task he had been perfectly content with until his entire being had seized up three days ago with a singular, maddening imperative. The Drive. Ancient, biological, and utterly inconvenient. He had fought it off with the same stubbornness he applied to everything else, but nature, as he is frequently reminded, does not negotiate.
So here he is, patrolling the outer shoals where the coral rises in great, brain-like domes of purple and orange, looking for something he doesn't even have the patience to articulate. Other mer have described it as a pull, a song in the spark. Ratchet experiences it as a persistent, low-grade systems error that won't stop flashing behind his optics.
And then he sees you.
You are drifting near a stand of towering tube sponges, your own tail moving in lazy, absent circles to keep you stationary. You are examining a cluster of bioluminescent polyps on the rock face, your back half-turned to him, utterly oblivious. Your frame is sturdy, built for endurance rather than flash, and your own biolights glow a calm, unbothered amber.
Ratchet stops dead in the water. His targeting systems lock onto you with an audible internal click. The irritating, grating static that has been clawing at his processor for days suddenly consolidates into a single, focused beam.
"That one. That's the one." he mutters to himself.
His first reaction is not joy or relief. It is a profound, volcanic exasperation. Of course. Of course his biological imperative would fixate on a complete stranger who is currently preoccupied with staring at a wall like it holds the secrets to the universe.
He vents a frustrated stream of bubbles from his gill slits and flicks his tail, closing the distance with the aggressive efficiency of a predator, not a suitor. The water churns faintly in his wake. He circles around to approach from the front, wanting to get a proper look, to confirm whatever nonsense his malfunctioning systems are feeding him.
You finally sense the shift in water pressure. Your fins twitch. You turn your head, and your gaze meets his.
Your optics are a warm, steady color. They widen slightly, taking in the sight of him—a red and white stranger charging at you with the expression of someone who has just been personally insulted by a piece of driftwood. Your brow plates furrow in confusion.
Good. You're paying attention. Now he just has to keep it.
Ratchet doesn't slow down. He barrels right up into your personal space, close enough to see the slight scrape on one of your forearm plates, long healed. Then he does the only thing his agitated, uncooperative processor can supply.
He starts to circle you.
It's not a graceful, elegant orbit. It's a sharp, spiraling corkscrew of movement. His tail pumps hard, his dorsal fin flared to its full, rigid height. He twirls around you once, twice, a red-and-white blur against the deep blue. The water swirls with his passage, a vortex of displaced current that tugs at your own fins and sends a flurry of tiny, startled shrimp scattering from their crevice.
He sees your gills flare in a surprised huff. Your mouth opens, but he gives you no chance to form any kind of communication. On his third pass, he extends one of his arm fins and deliberately, pointedly, flaps it at you.
The motion pushes a solid wall of water directly into your face.
You recoil an inch, blinking, your expression shifting from confusion to a bewildered, slightly offended shock. The glow of your biolights flickers erratically.
Ratchet circles back the other way, grumpiness radiating from every seam in his plating. This is ridiculous. He is a medic. A scientist. And here he is, engaging in a courtship display that looks like an aggressive and poorly-executed intimidation tactic. He flicks his pelvic fins with a sharp, annoyed snap and twirls again, tighter this time, so the vortex he creates makes your own tail have to work harder to keep you upright.
He flaps his fin at your shoulder this time. It's not a gentle touch. He plants himself right in front of you, close enough that the tips of your snouts are nearly touching.
