It isn't completely abandoned or lawless—there are families, ranchers, merchants, workers, lawmen, travelers, and wealthy landowners—but civilization is thin enough that everybody knows everybody.

🌵1. MAIN STREET>>

Main Street forms the commercial heart of Gila Crossing, with a general store, blacksmith, stable, doctor's office, saloon, hotel, barber, gunsmith, small bank, post office, and sheriff's office. During the day, the street is crowded with ranch hands, merchants, travelers, families, horses, wagons, and people passing through the settlement. It is the part of town where ordinary life is most visible, although everyone knows that Maeve's influence reaches even here.

Gila Crossing has a proper little law-enforcement district centered around the Sheriff's headquarters. The district contains a jail with several cells, an evidence and storage room, a holding yard, the sheriff's stable, a wanted-poster board, deputies' quarters, a small courthouse, and a telegraph office. The sheriff commands roughly eight to twelve deputies, but they are spread thin across the surrounding desert and cannot possibly keep watch over every ranch, trail, mine, and settlement. Officially, the sheriff controls the law; unofficially, everyone understands that enforcing it against Maeve is another matter entirely.

🐎 3. Ranch Country>>

Beyond the main town lies ranch country, consisting of several working ranches, farms, isolated homesteads, and stretches of open desert. Maeve's gang controls one abandoned ranch that they have transformed into their hideout and headquarters. The property contains a barn, horse pens, a main ranch house, weapons room, supply shed, underground storage, lookout tower, campfire area, and multiple escape trails leading into the surrounding wilderness. This is where Maeve actually spends most of her time, away from the noise of town and close enough to disappear into the desert whenever necessary.

A small wealthy quarter occupies the western edge of Gila Crossing, where powerful cattle owners, merchants, and businessmen live in larger and more comfortable houses. The richest of them is Cornelius Whitlock, a powerful businessman who owns a cattle operation, a trading company, several properties, private guards, and part of the town's water rights. Whitlock represents the economic power of Gila Crossing, and he despises Maeve because she repeatedly interferes with his business interests. Unlike the sheriff, Whitlock cannot fight Maeve with badges and laws; instead, he relies on money, influence, hired guards, and political connections.

The saloon district becomes the heart of Gila Crossing after dark. The Widow's Rest is Maeve's favorite establishment and one of the busiest places in town, attracting gamblers, musicians, travelers, ranch hands, merchants, bounty hunters, criminals, and drifters passing through the region. Maeve does not officially own the saloon, but everyone knows that its owner pays her protection money. Her presence there is enough to make conversations quiet whenever she walks through the doors, and the establishment serves as one of the easiest places for Maeve to gather information about what is happening across the territory.

The wilderness surrounding Gila Crossing is what makes the territory feel like a true frontier region rather than simply a desert town. To the north are rocky mesas and mining camps; to the south stretches the endless Sonoran desert; to the east lie ranches and dry riverbeds; and to the west is canyon country filled with Maeve's hidden trails. Scattered throughout the surrounding wilderness are isolated homesteads, abandoned mines, small camps, ruins, watering holes, forgotten trails, and random travelers. The desert itself becomes almost another character in the territory—vast, dangerous, and difficult for outsiders to navigate, while Maeve and her gang know its routes intimately.

Gila Crossing has a population of roughly nine hundred fifty people. Approximately four hundred are ordinary townspeople and families, around two hundred are ranch workers and farmers, roughly one hundred are merchants and business workers, about eighty are travelers and temporary residents, approximately fifty are lawmen and government workers, and somewhere between seventy and one hundred are criminals, outlaws, drifters, and gang members. The exact numbers constantly fluctuate because travelers arrive, ranch hands leave, criminals disappear into the wilderness, and new settlers occasionally attempt to make a life in the territory. 

Most Importantly: Maeve is not the mayor and she does not officially rule Gila Crossing. The sheriff controls the law. Whitlock controls money and property. Merchants control commerce. The town's established families control much of its social life. Maeve controls fear. Her authority exists outside the official system, built through reputation, information, loyalty, intimidation, and the knowledge that the Gila Widow gang can reach places the law cannot.
