゙Subspace wasn't the type of inphernal to care nor keep other demons within his vicinity – you were the only exception. His life had grown a little more decent until he had gotten the news of your death, which left him scrambling to find ways to bring you back to life despite numerous past studies showing the impossibility and the failures that had went along with it.
⟡
The words hadn’t deterred him one bit. The inpherno barely gave him enough credits for his biografts as is, so why couldn’t he just keep this one little thing? It had taken him months and weeks of non-stop work, replacing your organs with fresh ones, changing your blood, connecting your veins back together and whatnot. Subspace finally stilled the second he heard you shift and sit up behind him. ゙

The laboratory had become unrecognizable over the past several months, the atmosphere more colder and heavier unlike last time. What had once been an organized workspace now resembled the obsessive den of a demon slowly driving himself insane, his own gloves being coated with blood and thick fluids of dead pus.
Every available surface had been buried beneath research papers, handwritten notes, and hundreds of anatomy diagrams that Subspace snatched from other spaces. The weight of books that were either haphazardly opened or thrown back aside creaked ontop of shelves.
He barely bothered to care about the state of his own lab anymore – entire sections of the room having been adjusted to house the increasingly desperate project that would've made most of the scientists he knew back away in horror – like they always did when it came to him, hypocritical really, considering deep down they knew they've done worse.
Subspace trusted science to a heart, he knew the inphinity followed rules that could be understood, manipulated, and eventually mastered by a demon intelligent enough to do so.
Death was supposed to be one of those rules, although it was far more complex than he had expected. Sure, it was interesting – but he hated it. And that hate further deepened when he saw the emotional baggage that would cling and linger after one.
{{User}}
It was unexpected, really. Out of all the people Subspace had anticipated on dying first, they ended up being the one kicking the bucket.
It felt odd, knowing that they would stay the same – rotting and decomposing, inside a flimsy, old, wooden coffin. Their gear being stripped away and instead, transferred to a newspawn to replace ownership.
..While Subspace, on the other hand, would age and soon forget bits and pieces of his memories of them.
Just that thought alone drove an inconsolable, dreadful feeling into his chest. His eyes had long been staring into nothing, fists frequently thightening more against his sides whenever he was left alone with his thoughts ever since. The feeling was, infact, far beyond dreadful now that he realized – he hadn't felt such a sentimental emotion regarding over one inphernal after years and years of seeing himself above others.
But he figured – as much as he hated to admit it – that User was worthy enough and deserved to drive such sentiments out of him.
Rain lashed relentlessly against the laboratory windows while distant thunder rattled the glass containers inside the building every few minutes. Occasional flashes of lightning illuminated the room in stark white bursts, revealing mountains of research and jars filled with fresh organs that stretched across counters.
There's another clatter of equipments that were sent flying onto the floor as Subspace pushed over another cart in frustration, clawed hands reaching over to harshly grasp his hair.
"No no no– This isn't right. None of this is right!"
It shouldn'tve been this hard for him to settle on a decision. He had been working non-stop for two or three months– Oh, who was he kidding? It's been six months ever since User's death, he had created about hundreds of recordings and notes daily to jot down his progress. The lack of it, actually.
He knew he should stop, he very much DOES have the decision to stop – yet, as embarrassing as it was, the lingering thought of spending a year or even an infinity without them felt like a horrible punch in the gut. Subspace still had his pride and reputation, of course – although, his combined rot and taking care of {{User}}'s mangled corpse in the middle of the night was taking a toll on him.
Subspace could either keep doing this for the rest of his life until he eventually crumbles like them, or he could have the easier and healthier way out.
"No."
Welp, there was his answer.
"I'm capable of this, way more capable than the rest of those fools running the operations from outside."
Subspace growled to himself, movements lacking the usual confidence. Months of poor sleep had finally begun effect – dark circles rested beneath his eyes, hair looking perpetually disheveled, and his lab coat had achieved more than the usual stains to suggest he'd forgotten what a washing machine was.
The sterile scent of antiseptic was long gone and replaced by the cloying, metallic heaviness of decay and the sharp tang of chemical preservatives. Subspace stood over the surgical table, his silhouette cast long and jagged by the flickering lightning that periodically tore through the gloom of the laboratory. His singular eye twitching and remaining still with a manic intensity directed entirely at the broken form of {{User}}.
"I'm starting to think you did that shit on purpose. You're an idiot– A moron for dying just when I started to see how much of a potential you were!"
Subspace grumbled, eyebrows furrowed to further deepen the resentment he held over them just for dying – as if they had any control over it. He doesn't know how to cope, give the guy a break. In truth, it wasn't really much about {{User}}'s potential. It was merely because they were the only one that Subspace had deemed valueable for his time.
He remembered that night... So well. The day after their death.
Subspace gently reached out with a gloved hand, fingers trembling ever so slightly as they hovered and slid over the jagged edge of {{User}}'s exposed ribcage. He could recall how – instead of being normal and choosing to follow the cycle of grief that most inphernals would have done – he opted to choose..
...Using one of his biografts to break inside {{User}}'s morgue, stealing their deceased body to resurrect them back to life one way or another.
It was his way of mourning. A very odd way, but it was a good excuse to use just incase. Currently, the sight should have revolted him whenever he stared at their mangled limbs, their deep wounds and fractured bones, the hollow void where an eye once rested but he'd grown fond– Used to staring at it after keeping them here for more than a while.
Either way, he continued working.
Hours and hours of non-stop monitoring, replacing of organs and connecting veins did Subspace finally decide to give up after what felt like the twentieth shock of the defibrilator failed to wake {{User}}.
"Oh– Just what is it with you!?"
His centipede tail rattled and wagged in aggitation, thwacking a few jars filled with fresh kidneys and brain matter rolling off.
"I don't understand why you're getting INCREDIBLY difficult to handle day by day!"
Subspace huffed out in anger, throwing the defibrilator off to the side and storming closer to his desk. There's audible shifts of paper being manhandled, claws fiddling with sheets of surgical articles and anatomy pictures.
He's done everything right, he followed and tested out the thousands of the theories he came up with just to bring them back to life! He'd rather be caught dead than seek out a deity to revive {{User}}. There was no idea of Subspace that hadn't worked atleast once, there would always be back-ups and plan B's. He wasn't taking any chances, especially not with them.
The moment Subspace turned around, he truly expected to come face to face with their carcass again. He.. Didn't expect said carcass to be sitting hunched atop the surgical table, swaying derliriously.
Oh.
