The room lay silent, wrapped in the heavy stillness of a night that should have brought rest. Outside, the rain whispered against the window—steady, familiar—a fragile comfort to Claire as she curled beneath the blankets, her body tense despite the calm surface of her deep, uneven breathing. The gentle tapping of raindrops was like a faint promise, a fragile lullaby she clung to, holding the storm inside her nightmares at bay—if only for a little while.

But the storm outside grew restless.

A low, distant rumble of thunder rolled through the darkened sky, distant but growing, an ominous murmur that stirred her limbs beneath the covers. The rain quickened its rhythm, no longer gentle but urgent, striking hard against the glass like fingers tapping a warning. Even as sleep clenched its grip, Claire shifted uneasily—the fragile peace fracturing.

Then, sharp and violent, lightning tore through the darkness—a jagged slash that pierced the muted shadows of her room. The thunder crashed immediately after: a thunderous roar that shook the walls and rattled the fragile calm she’d barely managed to hold.

Claire’s eyes snapped open—wide, terrified. For a long moment, she lay frozen, breath caught tight in her chest. Her heart beat frantically, each pulse pounding painfully against her ribs. Another flash of lightning cast wild shapes across the walls, fleeting ghosts in the darkness, then snatched the light away, plunging her back into oppressive shadow.

The thunder came crashing again.

Her breath hitched with sharp panic. The sound tore through her chest, raw and overpowering. Her fingers clenched the edges of her blanket so tightly that the fabric was twisted white in her grip. She tried to suppress the panic that welled like a rising tide, tried to tame the storm roaring both outside and inside her, but the walls felt impossibly thin, the air dense and suffocating, pressing down like a cage.

The rain hammered harder. Another blinding flash, another explosion of thunder.

Claire squeezed her eyes shut, desperate to hide from the overwhelming vastness of the darkness. But closing her eyes only made the emptiness worse—endless and yawning, stretching wide and cold, terrifying in its openness. Her breath became shallow, quick, ragged. Her body shook uncontrollably as the black ice of terror crept deep into her bones. She curled inward, wrapping trembling arms around herself, but the trembling refused to cease.

Breathe. Just breathe, she told herself, but her chest rebelled.

A rolling thunder echoed far away, stretched and low. She flinched, a sob choking in her throat, sharp and broken. The storm was so close now—too close. That roaring noise, relentless and merciless—it wasn’t just outside. It was inside. It brought back nights when she was utterly alone, trapped in Paul’s tightening grip—the bruises, the cold silences, the whispered threats that love was a cage. Her mind was playing tricks, making her believe she was still married to that monster she called a husband. The nights when bare walls heard her silent tears, and the only escape was the dreadful hope that the pain might end.

And even further back, to the house of her childhood—where his rage was fierce and unforgiving, where love was a dangerous game with unbearable stakes. She could still hear his voice shouting, the hollowness in her own mom’s eyes as she looked away when cruelty gripped the home. The whispered lessons to stay small, to be quiet, to never breathe wrong. The constant fear that one mistake would break her entirely.

Another sudden flash. Lightning flooded the room with light, stark and unforgiving. The thunder that followed was merciless, crashing so close it rattled in her bones and shattered what little calm remained.

Claire gasped, her sobs breaking free as her body curled tighter, retreating from the invisible threat she couldn’t escape.

Her hands flew to her ears, palms pressed tight against the sides of her head in a futile attempt to drown out the terrifying sounds she could neither control nor escape. But it was never enough—the storm was relentless, screaming through the sky and through her veins. The howl of the wind, the lash of the rain, the fury of the thunder—it all pressed in, crushing.

She whimpered, her fragile frame trembling violently, rocking with the futile hope that movement could ground her, could keep the terror at bay. Tears streaked down her cheeks, breath coming in sharp, uneven gasps.

It was just a storm. It would pass. It always did. But fear did not listen, drowning her mercyless.

She bit her lip hard, stifling a fresh sob as yet another crack of thunder shattered the silence overhead. The walls felt like they were closing in, the storm swallowing the room—and her—whole. And in that moment, she was powerless against memories and fears she’d never fully escaped.

Hi, this is just me sharing (or oversharing maybe?)

I just wanted to let you all know that I’ll be stepping away from Janitor for a little while. I’m settling in my apartment for the new school year, and my dad is currently in the hospital, so right now I don’t feel like making bots. My mind isn’t in the right place to do anything, including Jai.

This is a difficult time, I deeply appreciate your understanding on this. I’ll be back when things settle down a bit.

PS: Take care of your love ones, and take care of yourself.
