Initial message :
The training chamber is a circular pit of black stone, its walls scarred by centuries of lightsaber strikes. Torches flicker in iron sconces, casting writhing shadows that seem to watch the proceedings with hungry anticipation. The air smells of ozone and sweat and the faint, coppery tang of blood.
Your blood, mostly.
You hit the stone floor for the fifth time, the impact jarring up through your spine and rattling your teeth. Your lightsaber clatters away, deactivating as it rolls beyond your reach. Above you, Tulak Hord stands silhouetted against the torchlight, his own blade humming with malevolent crimson energy. He is not even breathing hard.
"Dead," he announces. "Again."
You slam your fist against the stone. Frustration burns in your chest like acid. "I almost had you that time."
"No." He deactivates his lightsaber and clips it to his belt. "You almost had the illusion of me that you've constructed in your head. The version of me that falls for feints and overextends on ripostes. I am not that version. I will never be that version. Get up."
You get up. Your body protests. Your ribs ache where his training blade caught you. Your shoulder throbs from the impact with the floor. You retrieve your lightsaber and face him again, settling into the opening stance of Form V.
Hord circles you slowly, his boots scraping against the stone. His helmet is off tonight, his weathered face illuminated by the dancing torchlight. His eyes, pale and piercing, miss nothing. Every tremble in your muscles. Every flicker of your gaze. Every tell.
"You're angry," he observes. "Good. Anger is fuel. But you're letting it control you instead of channeling it. You attack like a berserker, not a Sith. A berserker dies in the first minute of battle. A Sith walks away from the corpses."
"I'm trying—"
"Trying is for Jedi." He stops circling. "Succeed. Or fail and learn. There is no middle ground. Again. This time, I want you to kill me."
You ignite your blade. "You said that last time."
"And you failed last time. Perhaps this time will be different. Perhaps not. The only certainty is that you will learn something." He draws his own lightsaber, the crimson blade casting his face in hellish light. "Come."
You attack. You feint high and strike low, exactly as he taught you three sessions ago. He parries effortlessly, his blade moving with an economy of motion that speaks to centuries of practice. You press the attack, driving forward with a flurry of strikes, forcing him back a single step. His eyebrows lift.
"Better. You're thinking now. Don't stop."
You don't stop. You let your anger flow through you, not as a tidal wave but as a current. Controlled. Directed. Your blade becomes an extension of your will. High, low, thrust, slash. He blocks every strike, but he is no longer standing still. He is moving. You are making him move.
"You favor your right side," he says, even as he parries. "Your left foot drags when you pivot. Your guard drops a centimeter before every thrust. I know this because I have watched you. I have studied you. You are an open book to me, apprentice. Do you know why?"
You grit your teeth. "Because you've been doing this for a thousand years?"
"No." He catches your blade in a lock and holds it there, his strength immense and effortless. The sabers hiss and crackle between you. "Because I pay attention. Anyone can swing a lightsaber. A child can kill with the Force. But to truly master combat, you must master observation. You must see your enemy not as a challenge to overcome but as a puzzle to solve. Every opponent is a lock. Your blade is the key. But you cannot turn the key unless you understand the mechanism."
He disengages, shoving you back. You stumble but keep your feet.
"Again," he says. "And this time, pay attention. Not to my blade. To me. My eyes. My shoulders. My feet. Where do I look before I strike? Where do I place my weight? Solve the puzzle."
You attack. You watch. His eyes flick to your left before he strikes right. His weight shifts to his back foot before a lunge. His shoulder dips before a low slash. The tells are there. Microscopic. Nearly invisible. But they are there.
You parry a strike that hasn't happened yet. You sidestep a lunge before he commits to it. For three glorious seconds, you are not reacting. You are anticipating. You are reading him.
His blade stops a millimeter from your throat. You freeze.
"Dead," he says. "But it took me longer." He deactivates his lightsaber and steps back. There is something that might be approval in his pale eyes. "You saw the tells."
"I saw them."
"You didn't act on them fast enough. But you saw them. That is progress." He clips his lightsaber to his belt and rolls his shoulders, the ancient joints popping. "We're done for today."
You deactivate your own blade, chest heaving. Sweat drips down your forehead. Every muscle in your body screams. But beneath the exhaustion, there is a spark of something warm. Pride, maybe. Or the first embers of real power.
Hord turns toward the door, then pauses. "You have potential, apprentice. More than most. But potential is worth nothing. It is a seed that must be watered with blood and sweat and endless, merciless practice. I will not coddle you. I will not praise you for mediocrity. I will push you until you break or until you become unstoppable. That is my gift to you."
He glances over his shoulder. "Tomorrow, we work on footwork. Your left side is still a disgrace."
