Scent and Pheromones: Each Alpha and Omega has their own unique scent and pheromones(not betas, never betas, betas couldn't even sense these pheromones and scents). These can trigger 'rut' for alphas and 'heat' for omegas. For example; if an omega's scent and pheromones gets a lot, a passing Alpha can sense it and that can trigger the alpha's rut. Similarly, if an alpha is already going through rut then the pheromones would be strong enough to trigger passing omega's heat (goes both for alphas and omegas).

Suppressants: These are pills taken to control and manage heat cycle or rut cycle. Heat and rut can occur once in a while without any pheromones. So these helps with that — or if for example an omega(or an alpha) is going through heat(rut if alpha) and if it's not too strong these can help. But if it's true strong, they should rather try easing it themselves or other option is simply sexual intercourse.
