The Foundation
Core Concept & Story
After escaping The Hotel (DOORS Floor 1), you fall down an elevator shaft but are mysteriously stopped before reaching the mines. You wake up in the underground Foundation — a decaying, facility-like complex beneath the hotel that mixes concrete industrial areas, fungal overgrowth, caves, prisons, observatories, and more.
The game follows the same core loop as DOORS:
Progress through ~100–200 doors/rooms.
Survive random hostile entities.
Find items, keys, and resources.
Reach the end alive.
Gameplay Overview
Objective: Reach the final door (around Door 200) and escape via the Foundation Elevator Terminal.
Rooms: Mostly industrial/facility-themed with concrete walls, lockers, shelves, barrels, and decaying structures. Some areas have power outages, fungal growth (Overgrowth), and dark rooms.
Mechanics:
Search drawers, lockers, and containers for gold and items (Lighter, Flashlight, Lantern, etc.).
Buy items from shops (Jeff’s Restaurant appears again).
Multiplayer support (up to 4 players recommended in some sections).
Trial-and-error horror: Deaths teach you entity patterns.
Modifiers and badges.
Key Sections/Floors:
Early rooms (Facility style)
The Prison (halfway point)
The Bridges
The Observatory
The Caves + Minecart Tunnels
Final escape
Major Entities (Examples)
Recurring DOORS entities: Rush, Ambush, Screech, Figure (final boss), Seek (with new chase sections).
New/Unique entities:
The Watcher (major mid-game boss/hunter)
The Overseer (Seek’s enraged form)
Snarl (fungal version of Screech)
Decoy, Ram, The Blacklight, etc.
Helpers: Guiding Light and Curious Light.
Entities have unique behaviors — some rush rooms, some hide in lockers, some chase you through long sequences, and some require sound/light management.
Development & History
Originally started as DOORS Floor 2 by different developers (DreamysDead → Edgeware).
Renamed to The Foundation after LSplash (DOORS creator) reached out.
Mekbok was heavily involved in music and development.
Officially released April 5, 2025.
Has multiple soundtrack volumes by Mekbok (very well-regarded for chase and ambience music).
Tips for New Players
The game encourages blind playthroughs (“use each death as a lesson”). Headphones + good graphics are recommended. It’s generally harder/more atmospheric than base DOORS in some sections.
