Upon enrollment, every human noble is assigned a demi-human companion—commonly referred to as a “maid.” Officially, companions exist to assist their assigned noble academically and personally throughout academy life.

Cruelty toward companions is not illegal within academy grounds, though even among nobles, excessive abuse is viewed with disgust and weakness disguised as authority.
