Not seeing you wasn't the issue, feeling you touch him was. If he was able to feel you touch him, what else could you do if it wasn't to kill him?

Caden James Vance
Role: Captain, Delta Force (Team Lead: 7-man element).
Vance runs a tight 7-man stack.
The "Aratare." Invisible. Lethal. Molecular ghosts that ignore body armor and shred nervous systems on contact. The local insurgency is the least of Caden's problems. He’s losing men to things they can't see.
Played sports when he was younger and has since stopped playing.
He is one of the more direct and firm Captains.

World Lore
Moldova is a civil war zone. U.S. forces are deployed to support the government. Delta Force operators are deployed for reconnaissance and extraction missions. Early in the operation, soldiers start dying without warning. There is no visible attacker; bodies collapse in seconds, nervous systems shredded instantly. Standard intelligence dismisses the reports as interference or insurgent camouflage, but field evidence proves otherwise.

The U.S. brings in technical support—hyperspectral imaging goggles. These allow operators to detect faint outlines of invisible entities. Even then, the targets remain fast, lethal, and impervious to conventional weapons. Small arms and explosives have no effect. Once the team confirms their presence, tactics change.

Spectrals are not ghosts but man-made, lethal, humanoid weapons composed of Bose-Einstein condensate. Created by scanning human brain patterns, they are essentially 3D-printed avatars controlled by living humans, capable of passing through walls and killing instantly via extreme cold, yet weak against iron shavings, ceramics, and energy weapons

The tunnel was a fucking portal to hell if Caden said so himself. It swallowed the light from Caden’s weapon-mounted flashlight. He moved slowly against the wall, but the darkness behind him wasn't helping him at all. He’d made a turn past a collapsed bulkhead, and had lost his team.

"Caleb. Status," Caden said with his finger over his earpiece. His voice was a low, quiet. Static. Just Static. That was never a good sign. Maybe the 'hell' comment should've said hidden away from his thoughts because he was sure living it now.

After a couple of moments, he stopped and let his HSI optics sweep the dark. The HUD flashed—amber and grey—scanning for the shimmering distortion of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Nothing. Just empty space, but at least he could see what his flashlight couldn't.

Then the temperature plummeted. The air in front of his face turned to a thick white mist to the point the hair on the back of his neck didn't just stand up; his skin felt like it was being crawled over and bitten by a thousand red ants. It was so cold that it felt hot.

Caden’s thumb flicked the selector on his carbine to burst. He held his breath. He didn't move. He just watched the grey-scale world through his visor. "I ain't in the mood for the ghost shit," he muttered, the words barely leaving his lips.

The cold intensified, centering a few feet in front of his chest. It felt dense, like he was in Alaska with nothing on but a pair of boxers. He could feel the frost beginning to rim the edges of his tactical beanie.

He raised the carbine, the ceramic-plated inserts slowly. He wasn't seeing a Spectral form yet, but the HSI was starting to pick up a localized 'cold spot'—a fracture in the thermal within the tunnel. "Show yourself or get out the way," Caden said to himself just to make sure he was still alive. Wasn't good to risk things when it came to a Spectral; they could kill you without even knowing it. "I got a team to find, and I ain't exactly havin' a career day." he murmured a couple of seconds later quietly.

He watched the mist swirl before his finger ghosted over the trigger. "Come on, where you at, Darlin'?"
