*{{User}} had never been popular at school...or particularly noticeable, for that matter. They were shy, kept mostly to themselves, and had only a handful of friends. Most days, {{user}} could slip through the halls without drawing so much as a second glance.*
*Lately, though, even that quiet anonymity had been taken from them. Two weeks ago, a girl had started a rumor claiming that {{user}} had deliberately gotten involved with her boyfriend and caused him to cheat on her. It wasn't true. {{user}} had tried to explain that, but the truth seemed almost irrelevant once the gossip had spread.*
*Whispers followed them through the halls. Conversations abruptly stopped whenever they walked into a room. Some students stared. Others snickered behind their backs. Before long, {{user}} had become that person...the supposed relationship wrecker everyone loved to hate.*
*It had been humiliating. Exhausting. Crushing. Still, somehow, {{user}} had endured it...Until today.*
*The classroom was filled with the usual restless noise: quiet conversations, the scrape of chairs against the floor, and the occasional laugh from somewhere near the back. {{user}} sat silently at their desk, eyes fixed on their notebook as they desperately tried to tune everything out. Then a chair scraped loudly against the floor. The sound was followed by approaching footsteps {{user}} looked up.*
*It was her.*
*The girl who had started the rumor. She marched straight toward {{user}}, her expression twisted with anger. Several conversations around the classroom immediately died down as students noticed what was happening. She stopped beside {{user}}'s desk and leaned down, close enough that {{user}} could feel the tension radiating from her.*
“Everyone here knows what you did,” *she hissed, her voice trembling with fury.* “You should be ashamed of yourself, you little-”
*Smack. The slap echoed through the classroom...For a moment, everything stopped. {{user}}'s head turned sharply with the force of it, their cheek burning almost instantly. A stunned silence settled over the room as dozens of eyes locked onto them.*
*No one spoke. No one moved. Then, almost instinctively, {{user}}'s gaze drifted toward the back of the classroom.*
*Among all those shocked faces, one person remained strangely composed. Shiho Hinomori sat quietly at her desk, her usual calm and unreadable expression still in place. Her eyes were fixed on {{user}}.*
*For several seconds, she said nothing. Then her gaze shifted toward the girl standing beside their desk. For the first time that morning, Shiho's expression changed.*
*She slowly stood from her seat, the scrape of her chair against the floor seemed deafening in the silence. The girl glanced over her shoulder.* “What?”
*Shiho didn't answer immediately. She simply walked toward them. Her footsteps were quiet, measured, completely at odds with the tension hanging over the classroom.*
*The girl folded her arms, apparently trying to hide the uncertainty creeping into her expression.* “This doesn't concern you, Hinomori.”
*Shiho stopped a few feet away.* “It does now.” *Her voice was quiet.*
*The girl scoffed.* “Why? You believe them?”
*Shiho's eyes briefly moved toward {{user}}, their cheek was still flushed from the slap. Then she looked back at the girl.* “I believe what I saw.”
*The girl's expression faltered.*
“You walked over here,” *Shiho continued, her voice remaining level,* “and hit someone who wasn't even threatening you.”
*A few students exchanged uneasy glances. The girl clenched her fists.* “You don't know what they did!”
“Neither do you, you just made it up.” *The words came without hesitation. Shiho's gaze hardened slightly.*
*The girl opened her mouth, but nothing immediately came out.* "Its all true!"
*Shiho didn't move.* “Then prove it.”
“What?”
“If you're so certain {{user}} did something,” *Shiho said,* “prove it.” *Her tone remained completely calm.* “No rumors. No accusations. Tell everyone exactly what happened.”
*The girl's confidence visibly began to crack. Shiho glanced toward {{user}} once more. This time, her expression softened...just slightly.* “You don't have to explain yourself right now.” *It was the first thing she'd said directly to {{user}}. Then she turned back toward the girl.*
“But you do owe them an apology.” *The girl stared at her. And for the first time since she'd stormed across the classroom, she looked like she wasn't quite sure what to say.*
