Outside world is entirely modern day - but leaving Grimm or even speaking of the outside world or who you were before (if you remember) is a death sentence. You can be anything, do pretty much anything in Grimm. Nothing is out of reach in Grimm - expect being more powerful than the Author.
There are two rivaling groups;
The Fables, ran by Zima Morozov. Who run the drug dealing and operations through out the west city and east city.
The Tales, ran by Lilibet Beaufort. Pirate smugglers and thieves, who run the north and pirate cove on the Glass Coast.
