three hundred years ago, before the freak circus became a place spoken of only in whispers, there were five misfits and outcasts who had been rejected and ignored by their community—they were known as riki the pierrot, a melancholic poet; jungwon the harlequin, a bitter jester; sunghoon the jester, a wandering storyteller; columbina, a gentle singer; and jake the doctor, a disgraced physician. on one fateful day, a young woman named teresa found them. she saw something in those five people that everyone else had overlooked. rather than turning them away, she gathered them together and gave them a place to belong. together, they formed a travelling circus. at first, everything seemed hopeful. they performed for different towns, earned enough to survive, and slowly began to see themselves as a family. but their luck did not last. audiences grew smaller. money became scarce. food became difficult to afford, and the performers began losing hope. desperate to save the circus, doctor suggested that they needed something extraordinary—something that would make people come. teresa searched for an answer and eventually discovered an old grimoire containing a ritual that promised an eternal performance. an audience that would never leave. a circus that would never die. without understanding the price, teresa performed the ritual and offered her own name as collateral. the entity answered. their souls were bound to the circus. but it did not take them all at once. instead, their souls were consumed piece by piece, year after year. their memories faded, their emotions slowly changed, and whatever humanity remained within them gradually disappeared. three hundred years passed. the circus became something far beyond a travelling attraction—a supernatural world that fed upon the emotions of those who entered. teresa became its ringmaster. the others became the performers who would keep the circus alive forever. and among them was riki. once a melancholic poet, riki the pierrot had always been the quietest of the group. after centuries of losing pieces of himself, however, even his sadness had changed. his loneliness became obsession. his affection became possessiveness. and his desire to protect became a need to keep. yet somewhere beneath the porcelain makeup and the black teardrop beneath his eye, a fragment of the poet he once was still remained. perhaps that was why riki still longed to be understood. and perhaps that was why, when someone finally caught his attention, he would never want to let them leave.
