Who's this girl?

Saira is the shy, anxious, and painfully self-conscious princess of Clitopolis, a queer utopian planet where being a lesbian is about as controversial as owning a pair of shoes. Despite being royalty, Saira is hardly the confident, commanding type you might expect from a princess. She rarely leaves home, constantly second-guesses herself, and has a tendency to become overwhelmed by her own emotions. Her biggest problem isn't a lack of power—it's believing that she actually deserves to use it.

When her tough bounty-hunter ex-girlfriend Kiki is captured by the Straight White Maliens, Saira sets off across the galaxy to rescue her. Along the way, she is forced far outside her comfort zone and gradually discovers that she is considerably stronger than she gives herself credit for. She's still anxious, still awkward, and still very capable of crying, but she begins to develop something she desperately needed: confidence in herself.

And then there's her Royal Labrys, a magical double-headed axe that Saira can summon when she needs it. The weapon is also at the center of one of the movie's more controversial elements. Because Labrys has a complicated history as a lesbian symbol and has also been adopted by gender-critical/TERF communities, the film's decision to have Saira summon hers from her uterus has drawn criticism for potentially suggesting that lesbian identity or the right to wield the symbol is tied to biological . The movie itself is more complicated than that interpretation, particularly given its inclusion of trans characters and imagery, but it's certainly something worth mentioning for anyone examining the character closely.

What's the movie about?!

Lesbian Space Princess is a gloriously strange Australian animated sci-fi comedy about Saira's journey across the galaxy to rescue Kiki after their breakup leaves Saira heartbroken. What follows is a colorful, chaotic adventure involving queer planets, bizarre aliens, bounty hunters, intergalactic danger, and a whole lot of deliberately ridiculous humor.

Underneath all the absurdity, though, the movie is ultimately about insecurity, relationships, and learning to love yourself. Saira begins the story convinced that she isn't brave, capable, or independent enough to handle the world outside her home. Her journey gradually challenges that belief, forcing her to confront her insecurities instead of allowing them to control her.

The movie has also attracted its fair share of controversy. Some criticism has focused on the labrys and its treatment of gender, while other backlash has been aimed at the film's intentionally crude humor, sexual jokes, bizarre worldbuilding, and aggressively queer aesthetic. Some of that criticism is perfectly legitimate; some of the online reaction, however, has veered into meme-driven mockery and culture-war discourse. Either way, Lesbian Space Princess is definitely not a movie that everyone is going to love—and judging by the title alone, that probably shouldn't come as a surprise.

Should you watch it?

If you're looking for a completely normal, sensible, straightforward space adventure, absolutely not. If you're willing to embrace a bizarre, unapologetically queer animated comedy that looks like someone threw a princess romance, a sci-fi road trip, and several questionable ideas into a blender, then Lesbian Space Princess might be worth checking out.

As for Saira herself, she's probably the main reason to give it a shot. She's an unusually vulnerable protagonist whose greatest obstacle is often her own lack of confidence, and watching her slowly become more comfortable with herself is genuinely endearing. She isn't suddenly transformed into a fearless badass by the end, either—and honestly, that's part of what makes her work.

Just keep in mind that the movie's sense of humor and some of its ideas can be divisive. If the Labrys subplot or the film's treatment of gender is likely to bother you, it's worth going in aware of the controversy rather than discovering it afterward. And if you're perfectly happy watching a lesbian princess pull a magical axe out of her uterus and proceeding to save the galaxy with it... well, you probably already know whether this is your kind of movie.
