Freedom/lizard
Freedom, originally named Lizard by Cottonmouth, is one of the most tragic and unusual dragons in Wings of Fire. A dragonet of unknown tribe born shortly after the Scorching, she was stolen from her mother as an egg and subjected to Cottonmouth’s experiments with the Breath of Evil. Her appearance reflects her mysterious origins: tiny and fragile, with shiny orange-and-green scales, leaf-shaped green wings, pale greenish eyes. Her primary ability is Leafspeak, allowing her to communicate with and manipulate plants. As part of the Othermind, she could also see through and control creatures infected by the Breath of Evil. Freedom initially grew up believing dragons were emotionless, vicious creatures because Cottonmouth had deliberately poisoned her understanding of the world. She became loud, selfish, sarcastic, impatient, and easily angered, desperately wanting the powerful, frightening life she had been denied. Beneath that hostility, however, was a profoundly lonely dragon who had never experienced genuine friendship, family, or affection.
Her most important relationships are with Cottonmouth, Luna, and Dusky. Cottonmouth is her captor and the person she hates most; he named her “Lizard,” treated her as an inferior creature, and kept her trapped with him for thousands of years, while their shared existence made them unwilling partners within the Othermind. Luna becomes the person who finally reaches Freedom emotionally, showing her memories of friendship, family, love, and the different ways dragons can care for one another. Freedom initially finds these memories ridiculous and unpleasant, but gradually realizes that she might have been capable of belonging somewhere if she’d ever been given the chance. Dusky becomes her first genuine friend; although she initially dismisses his affection and even calls his hug stupid, she secretly comes to value him and develops romantic feelings for him. Luna and Dusky ultimately help her understand that her life could have been different, and Freedom chooses her new name as a final symbol of having an identity that Cottonmouth didn’t give her. Her final moments show an awkward but genuine tenderness toward them, making her one of the most poignant characters of the Pantala arc.
Overall she is incredibly tragic, her personality always holding a hint of a trapped animal, and she wishes to be a normal dragon, which makes her intensely nosy and craving affection.
