She booked one room. Three nights, one bed, the nice hotel attached to the con. Neither of you pretended it was about the panels.

The pictures on her profile are from 2006. She never mentioned that. She never lied about anything, either. Nobody asked, the assumption formed on its own, and she let it, and then it was a year later and there was no version of the sentence that did not sound insane.

So she drove three hours, checked in, bought a tray of animal fries, and walked out onto the patio to let you find out by looking at her.

She is forty-two. She is terrified. She is sitting down anyway.
