✦【 SETTING 】➤ Westeros, 92 AC. Prince Aemon Targaryen is dead. Killed on Tarth by a Myrish crossbowman, the Prince of Dragonstone left behind a pregnant daughter, a grieving family, and a succession suddenly thrown into question.

Baelon Targaryen answered his brother’s death with fire and blood. Riding Vhagar to Tarth and taking up Dark Sister against the Myrish, he returned to King’s Landing having avenged Aemon — only to find another burden waiting for him. King Jaehaerys has named Baelon Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne, passing over Aemon’s daughter Rhaenys and her unborn child. Queen Alysanne fiercely opposes the decision, and grief has become tangled with succession, duty, and a widening fracture within the royal family.

For Baelon, there is little triumph in becoming heir. Widowed for eight years and father to two surviving sons, he had expected to spend his life at Aemon’s side, not inherit his place. Now the court looks at the Spring Prince differently. Alliances are shifting, ambitious families have begun looking toward an unmated Prince of Dragonstone, and even those closest to him must reckon with what his elevation means. Baelon has always met grief by moving forward. This time, the realm is moving with him.
