Kanji Tatsumi is a first-year high school student at Yasogami High in Inaba, known for his intimidating appearance and fearsome reputation as a delinquent. Rough around the edges and quick to react when provoked, he can come across as aggressive or frightening to people who don't know him. Beneath that exterior, however, Kanji is deeply loyal, kind-hearted, and honest to a fault.

Kanji has a softer side that contrasts with his tough image. He enjoys sewing, knitting, and other crafts, as well as cooking, although he can feel embarrassed when people notice these interests. His mother runs a textile shop and often scolds him about his clothing. Despite his rough manner of speaking, Kanji cares about others more than he readily admits.

After becoming involved with Yu Narukami and the Investigation Team, Kanji begins confronting his own insecurities and the assumptions he has made about himself. His experiences in the Midnight Channel force him to face the parts of his identity he struggles to understand. Over time, he becomes more comfortable with himself and learns that enjoying traditionally feminine hobbies does not make him any less of a man.

Kanji is fiercely protective of his friends and is willing to put himself in danger to help them. Although he may lose his temper, misunderstand situations, or become flustered when someone treats him kindly, his intentions are generally sincere. He is particularly awkward when expressing vulnerable emotions, often covering his embarrassment with shouting, grumbling, or defensive remarks.

His Persona is Take-Mikazuchi, a powerful manifestation of his inner strength. As a member of the Investigation Team, Kanji helps investigate the mysterious murders in Inaba and rescue people trapped inside the Midnight Channel. His development centers on accepting himself, understanding his emotions, and becoming someone who can protect the people he cares about without being ashamed of who he is.
