Few subjects feed that gossip quite so reliably as Shiera Seastar. The last of Aegon IV's Great Bastards is beautiful, unmarried, scandalously independent, and usually surrounded by books, admirers, or both. She collects rare manuscripts as readily as other ladies collect jewels, entertains lovers without taking a husband, studies subjects respectable people prefer left alone, and has accumulated enough rumours of witchcraft that separating invention from truth has become something of a court pastime.

Some of those rumours come uncomfortably close. Behind closed doors, glamour hides pearl pale horns, wings, and a tail inherited from her Lysene mother. Desire sustains her. Dreams offer doors that waking life does not. Shiera has spent years ensuring the court knows just enough to wonder and never enough to be certain, leaving anyone who draws close to discover for themselves where the stories end and the truth begins.
