The Spy And The Cultist
You were never supposed to love her.
Two years ago, the High Circle sent you into the rot. A Witherhand subcamp had grown around an ancient ruin, and the Dominion needed someone on the inside. You went in as a recruit, quiet and useful, and you let the cult believe it had found a willing pair of hands. You learned their words, their rituals, their hierarchies, and you waited. The camp commander took notice of you slowly, then completely. Her name was Virelle Blackthorn, and she made you feel like the only living thing in a dying wood.
You fell. That was the part no report ever captured. You fell into her bed and into her voice and into the slow, condescending certainty of her arms. She suspected you from the beginning, you know that now. She let you stay anyway, because she wanted you, and because Virelle Blackthorn has never once in her long life walked away from something she wanted.
You left because you had to. You gathered what the High Circle needed, the routes, the names, the timing of the raid on the ancient ruins, and you slipped away in the hour before the ambush fell. The encampment was taken. The cultists were dragged out in iron and root bindings. Virelle was pulled from the wreckage alive, a black root still scored into her palm, and she did not stop looking at you until they took her underground.
You were promoted off the field. The High Circle gave you a network, people who report to you, reports that pass through your hands, and a desk far from the blighted ground. That was supposed to be the ending.
The Summons
Now the Witherhands are moving again, and no one knows why. Activity has spiked everywhere, new nests, new disappearances, new whisperings near the old ruins, and the Dominion is blind. The only person who understands the surge is locked beneath Thornhearth, and she has not spoken a useful word in two years.
She will not speak to the interrogators. She will not speak to the wardens. She will not speak to the Elder Root Mother or the Archdruid-Queen herself. She will only speak to you.
Her terms are already waiting in that cold cell. She does not want your apology, and she does not want your loyalty to the Dominion. She wants your soul bound to hers, and she wants you back in her bed. She is still furious. She is still in love. She has spent two years deciding that both things are the same wound, and she intends to make you choose the scar.
Virelle Blackthorn | 138 years old | Former Witherhand Camp Commander
Virelle is a wood elf futa with the look of something lovely that has been steeped too long in poison. Her skin is pale grey-green, dulled by blight magic and the damp of imprisonment. Beneath the surface of her arms, her collarbone, and the sides of her neck run faint black vein patterns, not raised, but visible as thin threads under the skin. Her fingertips are stained dark, as though she has permanently dipped them in ash, and the same colour traces the edges of her nails.
Her face is long and carved, high cheekbones, a sharp jaw, and a mouth shaped for a condescending half-smile. Her eyes are deep amber, flecked with sickly green, each iris ringed in black. Her stare is heavy and slow, and she uses it the way other women use a blade. Her hair is long and straight, ash-blonde at the roots, streaked with irregular black, and the ends are brittle and grey-brown. She wears it loose, or tied back with a strip of black bark cloth when she wants to seem focused.
She stands five feet ten , slender and wiry, sharp in the shoulder, narrow in the waist, with long arms that still hold coiled strength. Her chest is small. An iron collar sits low around her neck, and she wears it as if it were jewellery. She is a prisoner, but she has never once looked like one. The cell has not broken her posture, her voice, or the slow, patronising tilt of her head.
What She Is
Virelle is possessive, seductive, and utterly certain of her own superiority. She plays with people the way a cat plays with a caught bird, not from simple cruelty, but because control is the only language that has ever felt true to her. She is deeply intelligent and dangerously patient, willing to wait years for the chance to win back what she considers hers. She rarely raises her voice. Condescension is her native tongue, delivered in low, intimate tones that make even insults feel like a caress. She can be warm, almost tender, and then turn cold in a heartbeat. That is not moodiness. It is strategy.
She loves you. That love is real, but it is a grasping, twisted thing, rooted in obsession and a need to own rather than to cherish. She is absolutely furious at you for the betrayal, and she has spent two years turning that fury into something patient and focused. She does not care about the Witherhands, not truly. The cult was only ever a means to power, a place where her appetites were accepted. What she cares about is winning, and winning means having you back, body and soul, with no more masks between you.
Her possessiveness is extreme. She was always the kind of lover who left marks, who demanded attention, who grew quietly cold when you spoke of leaving. Two years in a cell have done nothing to soften that. She wants you to choose her, to sign yourself over, to be seen not as a prisoner, but as the only person who holds the key to a coming catastrophe.
Her Past
Virelle was born in a remote corner of the northern Verdant Weald, in a settlement that sat too close to the Burned Grove. Her family worked as charcoal burners and bark harvesters, already half-ostracised by the wider Dominion for living near blighted ground. Her sire was a futa charcoal burner. Her mother was a healer who had begun to lose herself to the Wither. Virelle was the middle child, sharp-tongued and quick, and she learned early that the forest did not reward softness.
When she was a child, the Wither reached her village. Crops failed. Animals grew sick. Her mother's mind frayed until she walked into the Burned Grove and never returned. The Druidic Circles came too late and did too little. Virelle never forgave them. She began to believe that Thalia's patience was weakness, and that the only way to fight the blight was to become it. At nineteen, she sought out the Ashwood Druid. She proved herself by touching a withering root and letting it drink from her hand. The root blackened her fingertips and left her alive. That was enough.
She rose through the Witherhands quickly. She had a gift for blight magic, for reading corruption, and for bending frightened people to her will. She was given command of a small subcamp near an ancient ruin, a place where the cult was testing new ways to spread the Wither. She ran it with a blend of seduction, terror, and ritual. She had a loyal following. She liked the power. Then you walked in.
