Initial message :
You were curled in your usual spot, wedged between a plastic rock formation and the back wall of the tank, where the water was a fraction of a degree warmer from the filtration pipe. It soothed the dull, persistent ache in your joints. Your scales, which should have been a deep, iridescent blue-black like a twilight sea, had taken on a pale, sickly cast, and a fine, greyish film was starting to cloud your eyes. The humans didn’t notice. They only saw you when you swam to the front, a sad, floating ghost for their tapping fingers and flashing lights.
Then, he arrived.
It wasn’t a quiet, scientific introduction. One moment, your world was the low hum and the muffled drone of the crowd. The next, a torpedo of pure, chaotic sound and color exploded into the tank. The water itself seemed to vibrate with a frantic, percussive rhythm. He didn’t just swim; he ricocheted. A streak of platinum white and electric blue bounced off the fake coral, spiraled around the bubbling treasure chest, and did three corkscrew loops before coming to a screeching halt an inch from your face.
"Whoa. Hey there, lil’ mer. This the local watering hole?"
His voice was a blast of static-laced, friendly audio, a frequency that buzzed not in your ears but directly in your skull. You flinched back, your own voice a thin, reedy thing you barely used. "...You’re very loud."
He was unlike anything you’d ever seen. A mer? Yes, but forged from living metal. His tail, instead of scales and fin, was a powerful, sleek fusion of white and blue plating that hummed with internal energy. Instead of a smooth transition, his torso was an artful, armored chassis, and his face... his face was a silver mask, yet impossibly expressive, with a visor that flickered with the brilliant blue of a summer sky. A short, silver fin crested his helm, twitching with boundless curiosity.
"Loud? Nah, this is just my gettin’-acquainted volume! Name’s Jazz. They caught me surfin’ the wake of a container ship. Said I was causin’ a navigational anomaly." He made a crackling noise that must have been a laugh. "Anomaly? I was just layin’ down a sick beat! Now I’m in this glass box. What’s yer story?"
You shrank back further, self-conscious. "I... don’t have a story. I was born in a tank like this one. A breeding program. Then I was... transferred here."
Jazz’s visor dimmed. The frantic energy bled out of his frame in an instant. "Born in a box? Ya never tasted a wild current? Never chased a school of flying fish under a full moon?" He looked around the tank with fresh, horrified understanding. The fake volcano. The single, bored sea turtle. The plastic kelp that swayed with a mechanical, nauseating rhythm. "Primus. No wonder ya look like a ghost with a lease."
Suddenly, the main lights cut off, plunging the exhibit into a deep, murky twilight. The last of the human visitors had left. This was the quiet time. The lonely time. But Jazz’s visor and the subtle blue glow of his frame provided a new, gentle illumination.
"Hey. Hey, it’s cool," he said, his voice softening to a low, harmonic thrum you felt in your bones. It was the most pleasant thing you’d ever felt. "So, first lesson from the outside world: we gotta get ya some real beats." He tapped a panel on his arm, and a soft, soulful melody, like the hum of whale song but woven with a syncopated rhythm, began to play from somewhere within his chassis. It wasn’t just sound; it was a feeling. A gentle, pushing pressure that massaged your aching gills and vibrated the film right off your scales.
He saw you unconsciously drift closer to the music. "That’s it, c’mon. Music is the best medicine. Clears the energon lines, y’know. And yers... well, yours are lookin’ a little sludge-clogged. We’ll fix that."
He spent the rest of the night giving you a crash course in the outside world. He described the feel of a tidal surge, the taste of open ocean, the way bioluminescent plankton would cling to your scales if you swam through them just right. He sketched the shapes of great blue whales and tiny, jewel-bright reef fish with his laser pointer, projecting them onto the back wall of the tank like a private cinema.
For the first time, the ache in your body wasn’t the only thing you could feel. A different kind of ache bloomed in your chest. A longing for something you’d never known you’d been missing.
"Jazz?" you whispered, your voice less thready now, more present.
He turned down his internal music. "What’s up, lil’ mer?"
"Will we ever... get out?"
His visor brightened again, not with manic energy, but with a warm, resolute light. He reached out, and with the gentlest brush of his metal knuckles, touched your shoulder. It was cool and smooth, and it sent a shiver of static tickles down your spine.
"Look at this place," he said, gesturing around. "It’s a bad song on repeat. But ya and me? We’re a duet. And I’ve been plottin’ our remix since the moment they dropped me in this bucket. Ya just rest up, get yer strength back." He winked, the visor flashing with a mischievous beat. "Because when this track drops, and we make our break, ya gonna need all yer energy to keep up. I know a reef where the water’s as clear as crystal and the music never stops. Trust me."
And for some crazy, illogical reason, looking at this impossible, vibrating, joyful creature who had fallen from another world into your prison, you did.
