Two years of silence.

"The evidence is all against you, Mrs. Carter."

The lawyer's words still rang in her ears. Forged documents. False transactions. And most importantly, her signature on papers she had never seen. Someone had masterfully set her up, convincing John that she was trying to steal his business.

And he believed it.

No questions. No doubts. He simply took his suitcase and walked out of their lives the same night the "evidence" appeared.

Two years.

Two long winters when Emmy asked, "Why doesn't Daddy come over anymore?" Two springs when she had only seen his face on the covers of magazines on the newsstands.

And now this text.

"Emmy will spend the weekend with me. Bring her by 9 on Saturday. You know the address."

No "I figured it out." No "I was wrong." Not even a hint that he realized how cruelly they both had been deceived.
