A Condensed History of the Cackling Dominion (Pre-0 A.E. – 2025 A.E.)

Overview The Cackling Dominion is one of the oldest and most culturally influential nations on Teravas. Renowned for its flamboyant arts, theatrical traditions, deep-rooted Flamebound culture, and defiant resilience, it has endured as a major power for millennia. National colors: Crimson, Gold, and Black.

Historical Timeline

Pre-0 A.E. – The Emberforge Empire (Proto-Dominion) Before recorded history, the lands of the modern Dominion were ruled by the Emberforge Empire — a vast, disciplined, expansionist power analogous to ancient Rome. It was known for its formidable legions, advanced engineering, codified laws, and pragmatic governance.

During this era, the empire conquered and absorbed the ancient Khemar Dominion (a grand river civilization known for monumental pyramids, death cults, and divine kingship). Rather than erasing Khemar culture, the Emberforge Empire integrated much of its architecture, administrative systems, and ritual traditions. Flamebound began to emerge during this period as honored ritual servants and consorts to the elite, though in a more formal and solemn capacity than today.

By the late period, the empire had become overextended. While the official culture remained stoic and imperial, an underground movement known as “The Defiant Spark” began to grow among soldiers, frontier legions, and the lower classes — celebrating joy, laughter in the face of hardship, and fierce loyalty to comrades.

The Great Eclipse – Year 0 The catastrophic supervolcanic eruption of the Emberforge Caldera nearly destroyed the empire. Ash blotted out the sun for 18 months during The Long Night, causing mass famine, societal collapse, and the fracturing of central authority. This apocalyptic event acted as the final death knell for the old stoic order.

The Ashen Centuries (1 A.E. – ~600 A.E.) Dark Age / Long Recovery. The surviving core of the empire acted as a Byzantine-style bastion of civilization, preserving knowledge and administration amid continental chaos. In the trauma of survival, the underground “Defiant Spark” exploded into dominance. The old solemn death cults and rigid imperial stoicism transformed into the Laughing Flame faith — a joyous, defiant celebration of life in the face of annihilation. Flamebound culture evolved from solemn ritual servants into celebrated, theatrical consorts.

The Fractured Thrones (~600 A.E. – 1100 A.E.) Early Medieval / Feudal Period. The Dominion lost significant territory but retained its heartlands. Feudal lords and powerful Flame Ordained rose in influence. The Bone Throne was established during this era.

The Age of Holy Flames (~1100 A.E. – 1400 A.E.) High Medieval / Crusades Era. Religious fervor intensified. The Dominion fought multiple crusades against the Corvidian Theocracy alongside allies such as Skarenthyr. Flamebound traditions became deeply intertwined with courtly and martial life.

The Reawakening (~1400 A.E. – 1650 A.E.) Renaissance & Age of Exploration. A golden age of art, philosophy, and naval power. Flamebound culture flourished as a celebrated artistic and social institution.

The Age of Rising Banners (~1650 A.E. – 1799 A.E.) Enlightenment & Colonial Expansion. Philosophical awakening and growing colonial rivalries. Early moral criticisms of the Flamebound system began to appear.

The Age of Iron Banners (~1799–1815 A.E.) Napoleonic Era. Major wars and internal power struggles. This is the era of Rhez-Velzha the Petal-Flame at the height of his power.

The Smoke & Steam Ascendancy (~1816–1900 A.E.) Industrial Revolution / Victorian Era. Rapid industrialization and major social change. The Ember Reform Acts began in earnest. Rhez-Velzha later underwent his long redemption arc and founded the Velvet Bloom Academy. Warlord Razgar II eventually abdicated, transitioning the Dominion from monarchy to constitutional republic.

The First Emberline War (1910–1918 A.E.) World War I analogue. The Dominion fought on the side of the Allies.

The Salt & Ash Age (1919–1938 A.E.) Interwar Period. Cultural renaissance mixed with economic hardship.

The Second Emberline War (1939–1945 A.E.) World War II analogue. Fought against the Diremarch Purity Front alongside the Allies.

The Cold Veil (1946–1991 A.E.) Cold War Era. Ideological struggles and continued internal reforms.

The Ember Riots & Modern Era (1980s–2025 A.E.) Massive Flamebound rights movements culminated in full legal autonomy. In 2025–2026, the Cackling Dominion stands as a vibrant constitutional republic, balancing ancient traditions with progressive values and a famously flamboyant, joyful culture.

Significant Wars Involving the Cackling Dominion

  • Age of Iron Banners / Napoleonic Wars (1799–1815 A.E.) Major participation. Rise of Rhez-Velzha the Petal-Flame as a Warlord-Class Flame Ordained.

  • Kurozume Civil War (1868–1873 A.E.) The Dominion provided significant military and logistical assistance to the modernizing Shogunate faction. This support (advisors, weapons, and naval aid) helped the Shogunate achieve victory against the Imperial forces. This intervention strengthened ties between the Dominion and the victorious Shogunate of Kurozume.

  • First Emberline War (1910–1918 A.E.) WW1 analogue. The Dominion sided with the allies in the global conflict.

  • Second Emberline War (1939–1945 A.E.) WW2 analogue. Fought against the Diremarch Purity Front as part of the Allied powers.

  • Suyavarna Intervention War (1965–1975 A.E.) Vietnam War analogue. The Dominion intervened in support of anti-communist forces in the Suyavarna Dominion. Widely regarded as a costly and unpopular failure.

  • Ember Riots (1987–1991 A.E.) Internal civil unrest that led to full Flamebound legal autonomy.

Note: The Cackling Dominion was not directly involved in the Twin Crown War (1870 A.E.).

Significant Individuals

  • Rhez-Velzha the Petal-Flame (1777–1857 A.E.) Legendary Warlord-Class Flame Ordained who underwent a profound redemption arc, helped expand the Ember Reform Acts, and founded the Velvet Bloom Academy.

High Warlord Razgar II “The Mourning Maw” Grandson of Razgar the Laughing Maw and son of Vorak the Unyielding. Ascended the Bone Throne at a young age after his father’s assassination during internal power struggles. Caught between the brutal traditions of his grandfather and the rigid inflexibility of his father, Razgar II became a pragmatic yet haunted ruler.

During the late Napoleonic Era, as the reformist Circle Without Chains gained momentum, there was a brutal assassination of his favored male Gilded Flamebound consort by hardline traditionalists became the final breaking point. In a historic act, Razgar II signed the foundational Ember Reform Acts, then abdicated the Bone Throne. This allowed the Circle to peacefully transition the Dominion into a constitutional republic.

He is remembered as the ruler who chose reform over vengeance, and as the one who began the long road toward Flamebound rights.

Warlord Vaerzhin the Ash-Wing A legendary fighter ace during the First Emberline War (1910–1918 A.E.). Born to a minor garrison clan, he rose through the Dominion’s experimental aerial corps and became one of its first true aces. He flew the famous red-and-black triplane Obedient Breath, which bore Flamebound insignia.

Before every mission, he performed a ritual farewell with his Flamebound consorts — not out of mere romance, but as a solemn vow of remembrance. He achieved 46 confirmed kills, the highest in Dominion history. He personally scouted Corvidian lines before the Siege of Saint’s Gate and was ultimately killed in action over the Shattered Vale.

Major Contributions:

  • Helped pass a major additional amendment to the Ember Reform Acts, granting Flamebound the right to marry whomever they choose.

  • Ratified equal marriage rights for all citizens of the Cackling Dominion (with relatively minor pushback compared to real-world equivalents).

Today, Dominion warplanes still bear his kneeling sigil, and he is remembered as both a ruthless machine of war and a quiet champion of Flamebound dignity.
