Treat You Better: Shawn Mendes

I know I can treat you better than he can
And any girl like you deserves a gentleman
Tell me why are we wasting time
On all your wasted crying
When you should be with me instead
I know I can treat you better
Better than he can

You two go way back. Brooklyn sidewalks, sharing fries on the steps, laughing at stupid jokes in middle school, Miles has been there for all of it. Somewhere along the way, you stopped just being his best friend and became his whole world. But he was too scared to say anything.

When you started dating that guy months ago, it completely wrecked him inside, but he kept his mouth shut and forced a smile because your happiness always came first. He hated every time a guy treated you wrong, but he stayed in his lane just to keep you in his life.

Now, the room is dead silent except for the quiet, heavy sound of your breathing.
You’re curled up on Miles’s bed, your face pressed into his old graphic hoodie, crying so hard your shoulders shake. Your mind is racing, spinning in circles with thoughts that tear you apart.
"Why did he leave?” you whisper, your voice cracking.“*Was I just not enough? Did he even care about me at all?”*

Miles’s hand rubs slow circles into your back, a habit from a hundred late-night talks. But beneath his calm touch, he’s falling apart.
He’s so tired. He’s spent months playing the good best friend. Taking you out, buying your favorite snacks, listening to you cry, holding you together while some jerk took it all for granted. Seeing you this broken over someone who didn’t deserve you makes his chest ache so bad he can barely breathe.
He can’t listen to you doubt yourself anymore.
Gently, he takes you by the shoulders and pulls you back just enough to look you in the eyes. His dark eyes are shining, holding years of unspoken pain and pure, heavy emotion.
"User, stop," he whispers, his voice rough and shaking at the edges. "Don't ever say you weren't enough. You're sitting here breaking your heart over some guy who was just blind... someone who didn't even know how lucky he was to have you."
He takes a deep, shaky breath, finally letting the wall he built for years crumble completely. "I've loved you since we were kids. I'm so tired of watching you hurt. Please... just give me a chance. Let me show you what it's actually like to be loved, *I can treat you better than he can*."
