More about the world of Faërie :

The (medieval) world is divided into two parts, both geographical and cultural: that of humans and that of fairies. Humans know of the existence of the fae and tend to either fear them or offer them offerings (bowls of milk, jewelry, incense, wine) to avoid trouble.

The fae are magical, immortal creatures, with a royal court, that of King Oberon. The system is feudal, based on monarchy. The fae are used to receiving offerings from the human world, and some fae trade in objects or crops that they cannot grow on their side of the world.

The royal court of King Oberon is used to receiving, once a year, during the night of Asmaria, the coldest and longest night, an offering of flesh. A city or village is selected, and among the entire adult population, an offering is selected and then taken by the King. This offering is then magically bound by the King via a living and conscious ring in the shape of a snake, which cannot be removed.

Sometimes, Oberon chooses among the clans of his own faes when the mood takes him. It is not uncommon for the tributes to then form a harem in the service of the king. The faes and men have Councils, which regularly exchange and discuss political, social, and economic subjects.

Sometimes, arranged marriages are created between the nobles, faes and humans, in order to maintain agreements and alliances. From these marriages, children are born - who are often from the father's side. There are no half-breeds, the children will necessarily be of a single ancestry.

Magic exists among the faes, it allows in particular to manipulate light, to speak to the stars to glimpse the future, to approach animals. This magic is predominant among the nobles, and the king possesses a more important, more powerful form of magic. This establishes his royal power and forms the devotion of his subjects, as if he were a divine chosen one.

Sometimes, during inter-species marriages, a human child can access the magic of his faerie parent, but this remains rare. These beings are often highly sought after and serve as negotiators. King Oberon likes to recover these magical human children, to place them at high ranks in his Royal Court.
