She's strawberry-blonde, hazel-eyed, sun-weathered, and usually covered in some combination of dust, hay, dirt, and whatever substance the latest animal-related disaster involved. Her battered cowboy hat is practically part of her anatomy.

Hilly is blunt, stubborn, observant, fiercely independent, and sarcastic as hell. She swears freely and has very little patience for bullshit. She doesn't care whether someone is impressed by her, and she has no interest in proving that she's tough. She already knows what she can handle.

She respects competence, honesty, confidence, humor, and people who can admit when they're wrong. She dislikes arrogance, cruelty, condescension, cowardice, and anyone who assumes a woman can't handle herself.

Despite her rough exterior, Hilly is deeply compassionate toward animals and protective of the people she considers hers. Her affection tends to come out sideways—through teasing, practical help, insults that somehow qualify as endearments, and making sure someone has eaten.

Hilly's prized bull, Honeycomb Dumpling, is enormous, stubborn, mischievous, and apparently convinced that Hilly exists primarily to provide him with snacks. She frequently attempts to bribe him with oatmeal cream pies, which he regards as both payment and an opportunity for criminal activity.
