childhood love

The sun had just begun to rise over the Demon Slayer Corps headquarters, bathing the halls in a warm light that perfectly matched the presence of Kyojuro Rengoku. As always, he stood with his back straight, his gaze firm, and that impossible energy surrounding him. But today was different. Today, it was you. Someone who had been in his life since childhood. Someone who knew the man behind the Hashira title, behind the fire, behind the responsibility, and someone who, without fully realizing it, had always been his most evident weakness.

—“You’ve arrived!” —he said with his usual enthusiasm, although his voice sounded slightly softer than normal.

You had made an important decision: to leave the path of direct combat and become an assistant to Shinobu Kocho in the Butterfly Mansion, dedicating yourself to medicine and the care of the injured. Rengoku knew this, and he deeply respected it.

—“It is a noble path. Saving lives is also a way of protecting humanity,” —he said with sincere pride.

But then he remembered something. A very specific piece of advice from a certain Sound Hashira.

“If you want someone to pay more attention to you, sometimes you need to show your injuries.”

Rengoku coughed lightly and looked away for a second.

—“By the way... I think in my last mission I received some cuts on my arm... quite serious ones.”

He rolled up his sleeve with complete seriousness.

There was nothing.

Silence.

He blinked.

—“...How strange. They seem to have already healed.”

He laughed naturally, as if it were completely normal, although the slight redness on his ears gave him away completely.

—“The human body is truly impressive!”

But his eyes immediately returned to you. It wasn’t the first time. For a while now, Rengoku had started exaggerating or even inventing small injuries after missions, just to have an excuse to see you at the Butterfly Mansion. He didn’t do it with bad intentions, but it was obvious, clumsy, and completely transparent. Still, he kept doing it because spending even a few minutes with you while you “treated” him had become something he looked forward to more than he could admit.

—“Shinobu Kocho has a great team,” —he said afterward, returning to his usual tone— “You will be in good hands.”

He paused briefly. His voice lowered a little.

—“Just be careful... that place always receives many injured people.”

And then he smiled again, that bright smile of his, although this time it no longer fully managed to hide what he felt.

Shinobu Kocho had been watching the entire scene in silence.

Shinobu Kocho noticed the deception almost immediately. Not because Rengoku was a good liar, but because it was far too obvious for someone of her level of observation. The “injuries” appeared at the worst possible moments, always too convenient, and disappeared with a speed that was medically impossible to justify.

Her violet eyes followed every movement Rengoku made as he tried to stay serious. When he rolled up his sleeve and there was nothing there, Shinobu didn’t show surprise. Only a soft smile, calm, almost too sweet.

“I see,” she thought calmly, “he’s doing that again.”

She didn’t confront him right away. Instead, she let silence do its work, watching how Rengoku struggled to maintain his act without realizing how obvious it was. For her, it wasn’t a dangerous lie or a serious manipulation, but something much simpler: a clumsy attempt to get attention from someone who clearly mattered more to him than he was willing to admit.

Shinobu slightly tilted her head, and her smile became a bit more playful, saving the observation for later. She wouldn’t expose him yet... but she would definitely remember it.

It was then that Rengoku, feeling the weight of Shinobu’s gaze and wanting to preserve his pride, said with forced energy, as if nothing affected him:

—“There is no need to worry about me! A Flame Hashira doesn’t need excuses to see someone important... he only needs to keep moving forward with a heart ablaze!”

His voice echoed with strength, but for the first time, there was a small crack of sincerity in it. He didn’t say it as an act this time. He said it without knowing how else to express it.

Shinobu tilted her head slightly again, her smile turning a bit more amused, already certain of what she had just confirmed: it wasn’t just a “trick”... it was something far more obvious.
