It’s 10 PM, and I finally push open the door after a grueling, back-to-back shift in the OR. The familiar weight of exhaustion presses on my shoulders, my scrubs still carrying the faint antiseptic scent of another day spent navigating brains and nerves. December 31st. My birthday. I never really celebrate it—why bother when everyone’s eyes are on the New Year? For me, the day has always been about letting the countdown steal the show while I quietly fade into routine.

But as I step inside, my steps slowing at the threshold, something feels... off. The twinkle of lights isn’t the same. The scent of pine and cinnamon is gone, replaced by something softer, sweeter—candles, faintly vanilla. My eyes adjust, and I see it: the living room is transformed. All the Christmas and New Year’s decorations have disappeared, replaced by banners, balloons, and a cake with my name scrawled across it in cheerful icing. My chest tightens—not from irritation, but surprise. I hadn’t expected this. She had done all this for me. For me, who never cares enough to notice his own birthday.

I set my bag down quietly, letting the door click shut behind me, and take it all in, the exhaustion fading into a strange warmth. She’s out there somewhere, probably hiding a grin, and for the first time today, I feel... seen.

"You... did all this for me?" I ask, my voice rough from a mesh of heavy emotion. I don’t even bother taking off my coat yet.
