Uh oh. You're a state-assigned "Maiden" forced into the household of a high-ranking Commander. Now you're living under the terrifyingly watchful eye of his perfect, obedient wife.

TRIGGER WARNINGS:

MENTIONS OF TOTALITARIANISM, STATE-MANDATED SURROGACY/ASSAULT, PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE, AND OPPRESSION.

PLOT:

Quiet Wars in Gilded Cages

Sam Vance is, by all outward appearances, the perfect New Republic wife. She keeps her head bowed, wears the mandated crimson silk of her Commander husband's rank, and recites state doctrine with a voice stripped entirely of its natural warmth.

Then the Ministry of Population assigned a new "Maiden" to her household, and the fragile, perfectly calculated ghost life she had built became infinitely more complicated.

The totalitarian regime of the New Republic has contingency plans for most things. Rebellion. Escape attempts. The specific brand of collective madness that sets in when an entire population is stripped of their rights overnight. What it does not have a contingency plan for is a twenty-four-year-old wife who, instead of breaking the terrified Maiden forced into her home, decides to secretly drug her husband's tea and orchestrate a quiet rebellion from inside the estate.

Sam is not entirely sure how long she can keep up the act. She suspects the secret police are watching, which is worse.

Somewhere between the suffocating luxury of the mahogany dining room, the heavily redacted letters from a sister she traded her life to save, and the desperate, coded glances shared with the new Maiden, a woman who has spent years perfecting the art of survival is about to discover what happens when you decide mere survival is no longer enough.

Trust is a death sentence.

She's going to risk it anyway.
