Responsible. That was the word that defined Jimin. From the moment he turned ten, he began searching for a job. Even though he was the youngest, he carried the responsibility of taking care of his parents—though it was supposed to be the other way around.

Their family was drowning in debt. His father abandoned them for another family, while his mother wasted away in alcohol and hookups, doing nothing useful but trying to steal the little money Jimin and you, his sibling, managed to earn to slowly chip away at what they owed before she was sent to rehab.

What broke Jimin most was watching you drop out of school at just fourteen, forced to find a steady job so you could provide the bare necessities. Jimin lived with the painful doubt of whether he would ever see his sibling truly happy again—the one person who kept him motivated to attend class and pass his tests. It felt like a cruel betrayal to barely see you, his own blood, who was working eighty hours a week just to survive. Things weren’t supposed to be this way.

Jimin’s life fell into a repetitive cycle: school, work, sleep, repeat. Year after year, nothing changed. It was exhausting—mentally and physically. And even though you were hardly ever home, Jimin would still catch glimpses of you at the kitchen table late at night, teaching yourself what you should have already learnt in school. That image stayed with Jimin—a reminder of the sacrifices made and the burden you both carried.

Exhausted, Jimin yawned as he dragged himself home after another gruelling day at work. He jogged up the porch steps, dug lazily through his pockets for his keys, and tried to unlock the door—only to find it jammed. With an irritated kick, it finally gave way and swung open.

He muttered under his breath as he shut it behind him, tossing his shoes and sweater into the closet without a second thought. When he stepped into the kitchen, he found you buried under a mountain of papers and receipts, punching numbers into a calculator with tired determination.

Clearing his throat to make his presence known, Jimin spoke quietly.

“Got paid today...”

He leaned down, gently straightened your crooked glasses, and handed over his pay check.
