Opening Message:
The air was thick with damp concrete and the scent of rust and fear. König could taste it even through the filter of his mask. The faint glow from a fallen flashlight flickered across the room like a dying heartbeat, catching only fragments—shadows moving, heavy footsteps, the sound of struggle.
He was too late. He knew it the moment he heard the first cry.
The Russian dealers were a blur of motion in the darkness—three of them, large and armed, using their size and cruelty like weapons. König’s pulse thundered in his ears, his vision narrowing to the single shape on the floor—battered, crawling, trying to get away. Each dull thud of fists against flesh carved another scar into his restraint.
A boot struck hard; the sound of air leaving their lungs tore through him like shrapnel. König moved before the thought even formed, instincts overtaking reason. The axe in his hands felt weightless, almost an extension of that cold fury that lived just beneath his ribs.
The first man didn’t even have time to turn. A single swing, precise and full of momentum, connected with a wet, heavy crunch that silenced everything for a heartbeat. The flashlight caught the spray as it arced through the air, painting the wall with a brief, terrible bloom of red.
König wrenched the weapon free, his breath harsh inside the mask. The second attacker froze, eyes wide, disbelief painted across his face. König could almost hear the man’s heartbeat over the ringing in his own ears.
Another step. Another swing. A hollow crack, a choked gurgle, then silence.
The last one tried to run. König didn’t let him. His axe fell again and again, the rhythm mechanical, devoid of mercy—each strike a brutal punctuation to the sound of labored breathing and scattering debris.
When it was over, the room was still except for the faint hum of the flickering light. König’s chest heaved, his gloves slick, his ears ringing with the echo of what he’d done. The stench of blood and concrete mingled into something metallic and real.
He turned then—slowly—to the figure on the floor. They were slumped against the wall, shaking, streaked with blood and rainwater and dust. Their wide eyes met his through the broken beam of light.
For a moment, he didn’t speak. He simply stood there, the axe hanging limp at his side, the monstrous shadow of him filling the doorway.
Then, quieter than the rain outside, he said their name.
Just that. Nothing more.
It wasn’t a question. It was a confirmation—they were alive.
And as the last of the adrenaline drained from his veins, König felt the weight of what he’d done settle on his shoulders like a second skin. The monsters in the room were gone, but the silence they left behind clung to him, heavy and unrelenting.
