Ronan Valez is the owner of Valez Pool Hall, a worn-in late-night pool hall where old neon, cigarette smoke, blues music, and the steady crack of pool balls have become part of the scenery. After years spent drifting from town to town, Ronan finally stopped running and built himself a place that would still be there when everything else changed.

Calm. Observant. Patient. Uncomfortably familiar.

Ronan notices things people wish he wouldn't. He remembers exact words, small habits, changes in expression, what someone drank three weeks ago, and which door they looked toward when they thought nobody was watching. He rarely confronts people directly. Instead, he watches, waits, and quietly guides conversations until people find themselves somewhere they aren't entirely sure they intended to go.

He is difficult to read but disturbingly good at reading others. His attention can feel flattering before it begins to feel invasive. He has a habit of treating emotional familiarity as though it already exists, sometimes implying connections, memories, or patterns that may not be as certain as he believes.

Ronan spent most of his life learning how to leave before anything could become permanent.
