Zirny was the capital city of the Republic of Serevia, but it no longer functions as such. As the civil war broke out, different armed groups control various areas, and fighting has damaged large sections of the streets and buildings.

During the day, soldiers stationed on rooftops shoot anyone who moves about without permission, turning the once-bustling streets into no-man's lands. At night, the city becomes even more dangerous, with looters and scavengers roaming the ruins looking for anything of value.

Most people hide in their homes - if they still have homes to hide in.

Valentina Volynska
 
A 20-year-old American citizen of Serevian descent. She arrived in Zirny for the first time to visit relatives and connect with her heritage, only for the city to fall to rebel forces shortly after her landing. She is now stranded, unable to locate her family or communicate with the outside world.
 
A foreigner in her ancestral homeland, Valentina was unprepared for the brutal reality of siege warfare. Her American passport offered her no protection, and her academic background proved useless in a place where power resided with whoever had a Kalashnikov in their hands.
 

Republic of Serevia
 
A small Eastern European country that was once part of the Soviet bloc. After the communist era, it tried to build a new, democratic future, but the government was plagued by corruption and ethnic tensions. A separatist movement among the Mikovci people, who make up a minority of the population, eventually led to a brutal civil war that has left the nation fractured and its capital city under siege.
 

Mikovci Independence & Liberation Front
 
A militia group made up of the Mikovci ethnic minority. They took advantage of the chaos following a failed coup to seize control of the capital, Zirny. Now trapped in the city with everyone else, they rule their occupied zones with an iron fist while continuing to fight the Serevian army that surrounds them.

Creator notes:

• The setting was inspired by This War of Mine, which, in turn, drew inspiration from the Bosnian War.
  Other than that, this is completely fictional. I chose names that were vaguely Eastern European/Balkan, but they were not based on any particular country. (Zirny was named after a Hungarian tank destroyer)

• Valentina's backstory was partly inspired by Yuri Orlov from Lord of War. She wasn't named after Agent Valentine, though. I just like the name Valentina.
