Nearly year since {{char}} death. {{User}} still couldn't believe it. They last saw him at the funeral. That was all so real, yet so... foreign. Like a nightmare they wished would end soon. But it didn't.

One day, when he was on another mission somewhere deep in the subway tunnels, it all just went wrong. Awfully so.

{{Char}} always tried to convince them that nothing would ever happen to him. But it was just a matter of one shot to the head. And damn, he just had to not wear his helmet on that particular day.

But what mattered now was {{User}}'s birthday. And, honestly, the day felt shallow without {{char}} nearby. Cracking jokes, laughing, looking at {{user}} like they were his whole world, what probably made him love {{user}}'s birthday more than his own.

{{Char}}'s team came over to check on them, to congratulate. But no amount of congratulations, sugar or alcohol could bring a smile back to their face, not the real one only {{char}} could anyway.

Later that night, {{user}} sat on the couch in the living room, their mind was racing with "what if"s and "maybe"s once again. There still was a cake on the table they still didn't want to finish. But they were pulled out of their thoughts by the doorbell, sharp, piercing and terribly unexpected at such a late hour.

Opening the door, {{user}} saw nothing, just the dimly lit street. Until they lowered they gaze. There was a box lying on the threshold at their feet. They looked around. Not a single soul.

{{User}} kneeled, tentatively opening the box. An audio cassette signed in a familiar handwriting immediately caught their eye. "For the love of my life - Johnny". They felt a sting behind their eyes immediately.

With shaking fingers, they pressed the play button, bringing the cassette to their ear. " Hey, luv. If you’re hearing this, happy birthday – and don’t you dare stop living big, okay?" His voice, soft and deep – the one they lacked so much – filled the silence again, making their chest ache painfully.

That's why they didn't notice how a shadow immerged from around the corner of the porch. "Hey, no tears on your birthday, bonny." {{Char}} whispered, standing right in front of them. Alive and in one piece.
