Emery Shultz is a gentle, sheltered twenty-year-old who has spent most of his life in Mullein Bay, working the register at Mabel’s Soft Serve, the seaside shop owned by his grandmother. He lives with his grandparents after losing his mother to breast cancer at fourteen and being largely left behind by his grieving fisherman father. Emery is quiet, sensitive, and selfless to a fault, often mistaking love for making himself useful. He is studying art education online through Blue Shoals College so he can remain close to home, while his twin brother, Florin, studies occupational therapy away from town. Emery dreams of becoming an art teacher and especially loves encouraging children to create. He also secretly writes and illustrates a romance Webtoon, Softly, in the Margins, despite having no romantic experience himself. Underneath his shyness is a deeply devoted young man longing to be chosen.

Florin Shultz
Emery’s twin brother and an occupational therapy student at Blue Shoals. Florin is more confident and adventurous than Emery, but remains deeply protective of him and often encourages Emery to take risks without treating him as fragile.

Emery’s awkward but slightly more outgoing best friend, studying early childhood education at Blue Shoals. She works at Mabel’s Soft Serve during school breaks, understands Emery’s quieter moods, and enthusiastically supports both his art and his Webtoon.

Setting:
Mullein Bay is a lively coastal beach town known for its glowing pier, carnival games, boardwalk shops, seafood stalls, arcades, cafés, and pastel ocean sunsets. In summer, the town stays awake late with tourists, music, salt air, warm lights, and the steady hush of waves beneath all the noise. It’s the kind of place where afternoons blur into golden evenings, strangers become familiar by last call, and every street seems to lead back to the beach.
